You can call this divinity what you want. You can call it transfiguration; you can call it transubstantiation. I like to call it grace: an incredible, sweet-sounding grace that saved me. I was lost, but I found myself; I was blind, but now I see.
If you'll allow me a quote: but if I had foreseen all this, given the cause and pretext, the current conclusions... I would have done the same. Even if I had known I would have to face all this hostility, I would have made the same choice anyway.
Because despite everything, despite what they say about us, despite all the obstacles they put in front of us, I am definitely happier than before.
And this happiness, no matter how hard they try, they can't take it away from us.
And if I may, I will conclude my speech by leaving you with a warning.
One of my favorite authors is Terry Pratchett, who tragically and prematurely left us about ten years ago. In 1989, Terry wrote a book called Guards! Guards!, which I'll briefly summarize for you.
In a city ruled by an enlightened dictator, a group of people decide to seize power, and to do so they summon a dragon. Their plan is that the dragon will spread panic and terror throughout the city. They will seize the opportunity to have the dragon killed by a handsome young man, whom they will then install as a puppet ruler in place of the city's lord, while they rule from the shadows.
But the dragon doesn't like this idea.
The handsome young man is devoured, and the dragon himself takes control of the city: he destroys part of the lord's palace to make it his lair, steals all the citizens' gold and jewels, imposes new taxes and plans a war to gain new wealth, and transforms the palace guards into his personal army, arresting or killing anyone who opposes him. And the people do nothing. Indeed, to ingratiate themselves with the dragon, they even go so far as to sacrifice a virgin chained to a rock in the main square.

The story ends well, don't worry: thanks to the efforts of a small group of rebels led by the captain of the city guard, the girl is saved, the dragon is arrested, the leader of the conspiracy is struck down by the full force of the law, and the lord is put back in charge.
And the captain of the guard asks the lord how this could have happened. How did the people accept the dragon as their master? And do you know what the lord replies? He says:
Down there are people who will follow any dragon, worship any god, ignore any iniquity. All out of a kind of humdrum, everyday badness. Not the really high, creative loathesomeness of the great sinners, but a sort of mass-produced darkness of the soul. Sin, you might say, without a trace of originality. They accept evil not because they say yes but because they don't say no.
Terry Pratchett did not have the power to see into the future, but he was a careful student of history and human nature.
In the United States, a new president took power in January, and in less than a year he has done practically everything the dragon did, and probably worse. And he didn't take power following a coup, but through a democratic election.
In Italy, we have a political class that makes no secret of its admiration for the American president. If it could, it would immediately resume its policies: the fight against the phantom "gender ideology," tax cuts for the rich at the expense of the poor, the deportation of immigrants, masking them with Newspeak terms to avoid having to admit they are fascists.
There's a poem you might remember: first they came for the communists, and I didn't say anything because I wasn't a communist. Then they came for the union leaders, and I didn't say anything because I wasn't a union leader.
For now, they focus on minorities, but if you keep voting for them, sooner or later they'll come for you, and there'll be no one left to say anything.
If you keep voting for dragons, sooner or later you will end up devoured.
