Got some weird scratches/swirling going on, but that will hopefully clear up with some work. Then it will be time for coat number two! :3

The initial coat of tung oil is expectedly shiny. Gunna buff it out tomorrow morning; and hopefully getting a more matte finish, so it looks reasonably fresh.

Waiting on the pure tung oil to show up, so I made sure the entire back of the cabinet was prepared. Comparing it to the side, and its original condition; there's a lot of nastiness going on. #antique #pinball #restoration

Alas, it's not always smooth sailing. The white portion gives up easily, but the green does. Tried to really get at it, but got down to the original paint; taking some up. Still going to continue using the alcohol to clean, but ramping up my caution even more.

Looking up stuff regarding the some missing/broken parts; I came across this picture of a "Criss Cross" that didn't have the little numbered boxes near the scoring holes. Makes me think they were put on my playfield by an operator for some reason. So I may just wipe them off after all.

As I clean more of the playfield with denatured alcohol, it appeass that the bulk of the artwork is under a resilient finish. But there are these little numbered squares that must've been applied after that finish, and left bare. I'll have to be *VERY* careful around these.

Denatured alcohol: 1 Decades of nicotine and tar: 0 Looks like I've found a great option for cleaning this old #pinball machine that doesn't hurt the paint, and isn't abrasive. Might even give the playfield a tung oil finish. 🤔

So far, this is the only time sandpaper has touched a part of Criss Cross. The end of the shooter rod housing was long-since snapped off, so I had to use epoxy to join it. The top was then sanded to a uniform finish, and bluing applied to bring the appearance close to the rest of the housing.

Initial testing with some denatured alcohol shows that I can cut through the outermost layer of finish without getting down to the stain. This gives me hope for being able to apply a nice tung oil finish on this venerable pinball machine.

SNEAKY BASTARDS! They are hiding mouting screws under the wooden trim of the playfield!

The piece on the left (the latch bar) has been given a quick clean and a wax/conditioner applied. The rail on the right is as-found. If everything cleans up this well, I might actually go as far as giving the wooden cabinet parts a tung oil finish instead of just waxing it.

Hmmmmmm... I wonder which sections I gave a polish... 🤣

Some interesting things about this machine: the legs are two different widths; and between the bolt holes are little dots that correspond to metal plates that go between the bolt heads and the legs, in a basic numbering/labeling system.

$200 later, and I get to add this *STUNNING* 1934 Genco "Criss Cross" to my #pinball collection. A bit dusty, and missing some parts, but I'll figure something out.

It's been slow going, but progress continues on my efforts to build a physical "Space Cadet" pinball machine. The overall layout is mostly complete; save for spots in the playfield to drop connectors, or install more general illumination.

Can't sleep, because a rogue evening nap got me wide awake at 1am? Then I guess I'll make the revision to the mounting plate real quick. Not gunna send it off yet, as I've got a few other parts I'd like to send out at the same time.

And it fits like a fucking glove! All the clearances where I need them. Will probably extend it for another post on the other side of the stand-up target (area in red) (Ignore the fourth hole, I had it tapped for 8-32, not 6-32).

Building a custom #pinball machine, but not able to buy all the parts I'd need? NEVER FEAR! SendCutSend is here! Didn't have enough space for each of these four posts to have their own washer and hex nut, so I threw together a custom threaded plate! We'll see how it all fits next week.

(Ignore the grainy quality...) Major milestone last night on Space Cadet. Did a test fit for the optos on the Fuel Lane, and it all fit like a glove! I was mostly concerned about the inside of the curve, but all the time fiddling in CAD to give enough clearance paid off! #pinball #SpaceCadet
