WINDING RIDGE

Blue rolling hills waved me goodbye
I drove for hours and hours climbed a mountain up to the sky climbed back down to the river

Rockfish, catfish, crayfish

Climbed another mountain into the blue climbed back down into the gorge when I reached my destination
I was greeted by blue rolling hills

Rockfish, catfish, crayfish

By all accounts I'd crossed several borders don't bother asking rockfish, catfish or crayfish they know nothing about such things
the same river kept on flowing the whole way through

diving every now and again
A large shoal spread over the surface itself

So through the night
a huge vertical wall with fine fishes

Starling Telegraph

No time to wait for sunrise
birds sing early morning calls to get their message through
before trucks and machines break the gentle quiet of dawn

Intricate messages of clicks and clucks, coos and cries
I'm no code breaker, no interpreter
just a witness, an observer from behind the glass

I count the seconds inside one bird's call and a response
measuring the distance between their souls
I can hear them growing closer
to each other
