If traditional architecture and new urbanism is SO expensive, then why is a hotbed of it in #Oklahoma, the state with the lowest median net worth in America? #BuildingCulture #Wheeler #Townsend #CarltonLanding
I’m thrilled to release the results of my 50-year longitudinal study of 7 college towns (all of which I’ve lived in), expressing the correlation between progressivism and paperwork, and the downward pressure “progressive paralysis” puts on quality of place.

"A city is not sustainable simply because it is dense — it is sustainable when it is designed for people, proximity, and diversity of uses." - @IMMDesignLab ie, diversity and human scale matter.
🚨The #NCLeg Passes Biggest Parking Reform Bill in US History!🚨 The bill bans cities from requiring off-street parking STATEWIDE, from Murphy to Manteo. This is a HUGE deal. And a huge win for property rights, cities, and affordability. Happy Birthday, America.
🚨 New Southern Urbanism Series: "American Land Use at 250" 🚨 Our five columnists examine how the human spirit shapes American towns and continue our founding legacy as the country approaches its 250th birthday. #AmericanLandUse #LandUse #HousingPolicy #Urbanism #YIMBY #America250
I have watched 20+ documentary films on housing affordability, and have not been impressed by any of them. What #documentary #films have you seen on #housing that you thought worthwhile?
Is there a better building block to America than the 2 to 3-story urban building? #DhiruThadani
This photo makes the rounds every few months, ostensibly to prove that new things are lower quality. But the truth is that these are different woods. The top is southern yellow pine, and the bottom looks like Douglas fir.
I frequently critique US Planning because it has too many leaders who deflect responsibility from its historical wrongdoings. Dorothy Walker was different. She didn't shy away from Planning's dark past. She leaned into it, took responsibility for it, and worked tirelessly to correct it.
Panna Meena ka Kund, India Not sure how they got this one past the building inspector.
Keep this building in mind when the usuals come out against zoning code reform. 👇THIS👇 is what they will be advocating against. via @cityaestheticss (X)
If you have ever codified or defended off-street parking requirements, THIS is what you destroyed
Mexico City uses symbology on its metro maps to provide vast opportunities for its citizens to showcase art, thereby enhancing pride of place. US cities should take note of the grassroots nature of it all. Read my latest, onHousing" link via bio #mexico #art #metro #abundance
100 years ago today, on May 18, 1926, Durham enacted its first zoning code. How much of the city's best architecture was built BEFORE that date?
I tend not to design blank windowless walls, but I intend to underwrite a mural in this spirit as soon as I can. #placemaking through #art #localism #architecture #awesomeness
There is SPRAWL repair, and then there is PLACE repair. You can enhance a place through ornament, particularly when the #ornament is applied with respect to local traditions. This is soul-satisfying work. via Restoring Your #Historic House #NOLA #architecture #preservation
This year's Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU) will be held in Northwest #Arkansas from May 12-16. In this week's essay, I discuss why you should attend and what I will be studying this year. #CNU #newurbanism #development #architecture #urbanism link -> bio
A great new interpretation of the #missingmiddle housing types. Cities serious about #housing will CLEARLY express their intent to re-legalize all of these forms. (By Union Studio)
Do not let anyone tell you that zoning is the answer. Zoning is THE PROBLEM. via @remainplaces @newbedford
I'm #MAHCA. Make Affordable Housing Cute Again. It's amazing what a few porches, trees, and awnings can do. via @kronbergua
Who Killed the American Starter Home? And why was #Durham one of the few to bring it back?
Articulation regulations originate from narcissists with NO design skills. Such mandates are ahistorical, willfully ignorant of the fact that many (if not most) of humanity's most loved buildings have ZERO articulation. #architecture #traditionaldesign #badplanning #zoning
