Hey UK #energy people - an organisation I’m working with has been quoted £12k to have the gas supply removed and capped after they switched to heat pumps. Any suggestions for how they might avoid these charges? @richardlowes.bsky.social

The situation is that our school is seeking to permanently disconnect gas due to the site now being fully electrified (post our decarbonisation works).
The gas supplier has quoted £12K (£9,412.63 (excluding VAT)) for removal of the meter and disconnection at the mains connection in the pavement outside the school. Capping off the piping at each end included. It does not include removal of the pipework in the ground.
We have queried the high cost as we understand the meter removal and capping off connection in the plant room is only about £800 of the cost. The answer back was that "Our quotation is it disconnect and abandon the gas service pipe at its connection with the parent main, as indicated on the attached plan as
"Disconnection Point".
We will not remove any abandoned pipework; that is left in the ground and once abandoned, the site is free to do with as they wish."
The contractor also quoted "The disconnection must take place at the location indicated on the attached plan as this is a requirement of the Network Owner, the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations, the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations and IGEM/TD/4."

My guess is that one was my
Grandfathers bayonette from WW1 and the other two items that he bought while serving in Greece/ Macedinia. He was a scolarship Etonian and medical doctor and skilled artist who served in the first world war in the 84th Ambulance Corp in the Selonika campaign

These are the overall figures. For each sector you can get further breakdowns (eg transport can be broken down to cars, light vehicles (vans), HGVs etc). If you have them all together in the initial graphic it can get messy, esp if you want to show emissions over time.

My aged parents (late 80s) massively struggled in the last heat wave. I did all the passive cooling I could, ensured windows closed and all blinds / curtains drawn. I bought them a portable split system to keep the living room / kitchen cool, and think it literally kept them out of hospital.

It’s fab, isn’t it? We got up to 29.2°C on Thursday / Friday night, which was just unbearable. We’re now back to 22°C, which is much more manageable.

Interesting analysis [ahem] from the BBC on Starmer's time as PM... It's funny how they try to gloss over the impact of the Gulf War on energy prices: the Ofgem energy price cap for summer 2026 is £1,862/yr for a typical household "in part reflecting the impact of global events like the Iran war".

Energy bills up
Labour promised to reduce average household energy bills by more than £300 over the course of the Parliament, but in reality bills have gone up.

The latest domestic energy price cap set by Ofgem, the energy regulator, for the summer of 2026 is an annual rate of £1,862 for a typical household - in part reflecting the impact of global events like the Iran war.

That's an increase of just under £300 on the £1,568 price cap that was in place in the summer of 2024, which Labour inherited.
