It's crazy that amidst our unending contrition we've forgotten a truism of academic life: that humanists are very obviously the best writers. Even our most cringe takes are good.

Emily Wilson panning Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey is brutal and righteous but “There are no sex scenes, and all the food looks horrible” got me. DAMN GO OFF DR WILSON www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...

Nolan's Odyssey lacks many of the elements that make the poem great. It has nothing convincing to say about time, memory, history, war, or about the relationship between one warrior's glorious return and the lives of his family, adversaries, comrades, friends and neighbours. It lacks psychological, emotional, political and ethical depth. Its narrative structure is gimmicky. The writing is abysmal.
None of the characters has convincing motivation for their actions or words. There are no sex scenes, and all the food looks horrible.
The most troubling ethical problem with Nolan's Odyssey concerns the decision to film part of the movie in the occupied territory of Western Sahara, thus normalising the ongoing violence against the indigenous Sahrawi people. It is particularly galling that Nolan used this land simply as a visually striking backdrop for a film that centres, aggrandises and redeems the hero of a territorial war on account of his belated and partial acknowledgment of his own guilt.

I think by now everyone knows rideshare apps suck, but this book is full of examples of this model infiltrating every corner of society it can. I didn’t know this about apps preying on nurses, for example

In 2024, Katie J. Wells and Funda Ustek Spilda from the Roosevelt Institute published "Uber for Nurs-ing: How an AI-Powered Gig Model Is Threatening Health Care," a report on hospitals' use of apps to procure the labor of contract nurses, who are hired by the shift to cover staffing shortfalls (hos-pitals having sliced their unionized staff nurse cohort to the bone, these shortfalls are a normal occurrence).
Contract nurses used to find work through regional nurse staffing agencies. There were several of these competing in each market. However, with the rise of app-based "Uber for nursing" digital hiring tools, the regional staffing agencies have given way to a cartel of four nurse-hir-ing apps: CareRev, Clipboard Health, ShiftKey, and ShiftMed.
In Wells and Spilda's report, they describe how these apps buy nurses' credit history from data brokers before offering them a shift, and then reduce the wage on offer for nurses with a lot of credit-card debt. Those nurses, after all, are more economically desperate and thus likely to accept a lower wage.
This is a place where AI can really wring out some intensive wage savings. The goal of this system is to accurately guess the lowest wage a nurse will accept. Because these apps dominate the market for contract nursing nationwide, they get

many chances to lowball a nurse for a shift, and because the United States has no privacy rules to speak of, the outcomes of these offers can be compared with rich, deep dossiers on nurses' financial lives. Locating the biographical and financial correlates of economic desperation and quantifying their implications for eroding nurses' wages is a perfect task for AI.
The business world loves the idea of surveillance pricing. Economists have long dreamed of a day when every purchase and every labor contract is personalized, precision-formulated to the penny, so that everyone who buys your products pays the maximum they're willing to part with and everyone you pay is given the minimum they're willing to accept.
