#DWCon #DWCon2026 I have no idea what this is, but I found it on a chair on 3rd floor, and will be handing it to Ops.

An object consisting of two black diamond shaped sections separated by a silicone strip. The larger bulkier diamond has a raised white circle on it.

The flip side of the object reveals a blue circle on the underside of one section and a grey diamond on the other. When the strip is folded over the two connect magnetically.

It's Sunday morning at #DWCon #DWCon2026 and some people might possibly have hangovers.

Alt text? You want me to describe the shirt I'm wearing?! The correct answer is no, you do not want me to describe it. If you can't see it the aforementioned hangover-sufferers will be telling you how they they envy you and your immunity to the requirement of eyeball bleach. They will simply tell you that I woke up and chose violence. They are, however, mistaken. This was clearly premeditated.

Feegles at #DWCon #DWCon2026

Three chaps and one lady dressed as Feegles, ie. tiny blue folk with red hair and tartans. To preserve the illusion of size they carry a large scroll and a 6ft pencil with which they were having other con-goers sign it.

Grey heron perched in a tree, against a blurred background of distant treetops. Its beak is pointing right, and its beady yellow eye is focused forward.

Same heron from a slightly different angle. More sky, more sunlight, more resentment. The beak is still facing right, but the eyeball is now central as if it's giving me a death stare for having the effrontery to take photographs.

Little egret, perched on a partially obscured by branches, with its beak pointing to the right. It's about half the size of a grey heron with entirely white plumage. Its beak and legs are black, while its feet and eyes are yellow.

Never seen this pose from a heron before. Not sure whether it's trying to sun the underside of its wings or letting air circulate in the heat.

A heron standing straight upright on a rock in the middle of a lake. The wings are extended, but only from the middle joint rather than the shoulder, and the outer wings are held forward and with the undersides out flat and facing upwards. It looks not unlike it's trying to carry a pair of trays.

Common toad nestling among some trailing undergrowth.

I don't like posting pics here that were taken with digital zoom on my phone; I don't think the quality is good enough. But the ones from my lunchtime walks this week haven't turned out too bad.

Grey heron sitting on a tree trunk in the middle of a lake surface currently green with floating weeds.

Little egret wading, a brilliant white against the murky green of a lake reflected trees. It's a small heron, facing right, with a single feather tuft hanging from the back of its head.

Carp feeding. A slate grey-ish fish suspended just below the surface with only its eyes and open mouth breaking the surface.

Eurasian jay sitting on a post. It has a dullish pink upper body with black tail and wingtips, and a single streak of mottled blue on the wing edge. The body is facing left but the head is turned to look to the right over its shoulder. The grass below it is green, but the tall grass tops behind it are pale golden. The jays on campus have long been very camera shy, so while I'd love to get a good shot with my proper camera I feel pretty lucky to have gotten this pic.

Today's lunchtime walk brought to you by having a 4ft branch break off above me and graze my shoulder on its way to landing heavy end first on my foot.

The branch in my hand to give you some idea of thickness. Just a little too thick to close my finger and thumb around it. My hands are admittedly quite small.

I started hanging my keys from belt loops because I was tired of them poking holes in the bottom of pockets. But it's shorts weather tomorrow, and my drawstring shorts have no belt. So, one old lanyard and one quick sewing project later: dedicated key loop.

A small webbing loop sewn to the side of a black pair of shorts, just above the opening of the pocket. For strength it was sewn along the seam of the shorts, and through a matching piece of webbing aligned on the inside. A fragment of white text is visible on the inside of the loop, betraying the fact that the webbing was scavenged from an old lanyard. No, it wasn't a Discworld Convention lanyard.

A karabiner clipped through the loop, allowing the keys to hang just inside the pocket to prevent jangling. (While not sitting at the bottom ang poking out in all directions.)

Anyone would think we've had a heatwave or something.

Five freezer cabinets in Asda, labelled "Desserts" and "Ice Cream Tubs". All five are completely empty, as indeed are the other fourteen on that side of the aisle.

Didn't know there was a #BirdOfTheDay hashtag, but apparently there is and today's theme is #HeadShots, so here's a grey heron.

The head of a grey heron, facing left and looking slightly downward. The long pointed beak is a dull yellow orange and the feathers are white, with a thick black streak from just above the eye, and a dark grey mottling down the front of the long neck. The background is water reeds, dry brown closest to us but livelier green further back.

Today in Questions I Did Not Expect Ever To Need An Answer For: "Can I interest you in a glow-in-the-dark sperm keyring?"

There are ways to promote a sexual health clinic on campus, and more power to them for doing so.

And there's no doubt that having a three inch glowing green sperm attached to them would mean I could always find my keys in the dark.

I might have more trouble admitting they were mine...

Just back home from seeing The Prodigy. Not something I ever expected to be saying, but a mate had a spare ticket. Impressed, enjoyed it, but can't say I loved it; not my normal scene by a long shot. But definitely an experience.

There's a lone tree in Autumn, with an entirely black humanoid figure on the ground beneath it. If fully standing it would be about 8ft tall, but squatting, with all four of its long spindly limbs touching the ground, it looks like a cross between a headless ant, a grasshopper poised to leap, and a malevolent spirit of the night as designed by H R Ginger during downtime while working on Alien for Ridley Scott.

Which immediately reminded me of this. The British Dennis strikes me as a bit older and a more intentional vandal, while Calvin is a more innocent agent of chaos. OK, not that innocent, but he still had more wholesome moments too. Somewhere between the two?

A Calvin& Hobbes cartoon. Calvin's mum screams "Calvin! What are you doing to the coffee table?!!?" Calvin, hammer in hand, pauses while he considers the numerous nails already protruding from the table top, before finally asking "Is this some sort of trick question or what?".

The poster for "The Silence of the Lambs", featuring the face of a woman in bluish hi-contrast monochrome, apart from her eyes which have been rendered in brown. In the original the woman's mouth was obscured by a Death's Head Moth; in this version the moth has been replaced with a Bearded Vulture in flight. The bird's other name has been incorporated into the new title: "The Silence of the Lammergeiers"

Went for my lunchtime walk, and realised it's warmed up enough that I actually felt distinctly overdressed. Which means this winter visitor probably won't be around too much longer.

Little egret (basically a pure white half sized heron) wading in the lake. Its reflection is distorted by the ripples emanating outwards around it. Its beak is long, thin, black and pointy. The water is almost up to its body, so you can't see that it's long spindly legs end in bright yellow feet.

Tonight's shopping trip featured an unexpected intruder. Someone may have a long night ahead of them...

Shelves of crisps in Asda. A stray pigeon has found its way inside the store and is perched atop the stacked boxes.

Closeup of pigeon perched on a box of sweet & spicy flaming hot Wotsits. Clearly defying anyone to try and get him out; he got lost in the store on purpose and there's so many interesting things to peck.
