I told them what I thought of it. Push back. It matters. If nothing else, and they keep going with it, then they lose a metric shit ton of money when they do.

I can’t help but feel that this isn’t “consumer preferences” but a shot to cut costs for Sony while still making the consumer pay as much (if not more) than we have been. It really upsets me, as I have been a lifelong Playstation console player, having bought every incarnation that Sony has put out (even down to the PSP and the Vita) and if this decision stands, I will not be purchasing further from Sony. I will not be buying anything past Jan. 2028.

Kyle’s gut was a tangle of nerves that squirmed unpleasantly as she fixed her short, dark hair in the looking glass. With a huff, she pulled at her sleeves, hoping that straightening them would put the finishing touches on an outfit that made her look more the dashing ship’s captain and less the anxious suitor. Yes, she was both; she just didn’t want to look both.
She adjusted her clothing in the mirror of her cabin, fiddling with the edges of the collar that showed beneath her fine blue coat, the one of elegant brocade. She wore new, spotless black trousers and a clean white shirt, the material pristine, the top few buttons left open to make it low and revealing. Her father had given her the captain’s coat just that past solstice. She only ever took it out on special occasions, and it looked spectacular if she did say so herself.
And she did.
Not that that would matter. Regardless of how poorly or well planned, what came next wasn’t up to her. When not even her signature swagger and confidence could assuage her fears, she let her shoulders drop in defeat. “I don’t know if I can do this,” she muttered. The ring box in her coat pocket was making her ensemble and her mood heavier, weighing it all down with expectations and anxiety.
“Did you say something, Captain?” asked Markham. Gilbert Markham, a wiry slip of a man, was The Stargazer’s First Mate and Kyle’s most trusted friend. He sat at a small desk, Kyle’s desk, in the captain’s quarters, his long legs somehow folded comfortably beneath it as he scribbled notes on a piece of parchment. Organized and detail-

Part 0. Blood and Snow

Reina watched the snow fall beyond the windows and wished she could hear it.

There was no place in New Velles where someone could hear the snow. The capital of Impetere, it was the central hub of the country. Traffic clogged the streets, people hustled to get from jobs that barely paid a living wage—and many that didn’t—to bury their woes in the short but sweet salve of consumerism. They shouted, argued, and wailed along with the screams of sirens and the blare of horns that added to the cacophony of the city. There was no chance for the soft static of falling snow to be heard above the din. Despite her vantage point, high in the posh upper floors of the Nieve Corporation building, she knew even if she were able to open a window, she’d only hear the muffled din of the city below.

Nothing was going as she had expected it to. The bright, sparkling lights of New Velles only shone that way from a distance. Up close, from within the belly of this beast, they were sharp and painful, crusted with filth and yet still bright enough to hurt. From her little village of Vilheim in the mountains, she had looked down on the glittering city and dreamed of going. Now that she was here, all she could do was look at the snow and wish she could hear it.

She had to admit to herself that her rural home had kept her insulated. She hadn’t known anything of the unrest in the city, much less the country as a whole. Wealth inequality was all the more obvious when she went from her small childhood home to the skyscraping architecture of the capital city. She’d had no idea of the struggles of the poor or the naked corruption running through the city. No, all she had known was that she was in love, and that was all she needed to leave her life behind.

She had been naïve at best, deliberately ignorant at worst. Either way, she was miserable.

A quick, awkward pressure on the side of her abdomen interrupted her thoughts and made her smile.
