So many birds this morning!

List of this morning's birds: broad tailed hummingbird, juniper titmouse, bewick's wren, northern mockingbird, spotted towhee, lesser goldfinch, black-headed grosbeak, common raven (I have four juveniles and they're hilarious), lark sparrows - many at the feeder today! - and tiny bushtits in flocks.

Wild mustangs roaming around neighborhood

Theee wild mustangs, two dark brown and one gray, grazing in high desert juniper grasslands near our NM home. It's very brown now; we await the monsoon.

Two wild mustangs, one a slightly dappled gray-brown and one gray, seen through my passenger window. It's quite dry here but they seem to be finding forage, as they're not too too skinny.

Ryan Grim defending Platner is sounding very MAGA.

Ryan Grim, a progressive journalist and co-founder of Drop Site News, tried to undermine the allegations because one of the women from the story, Lyndsey Fifield, is a Republican. He then went on the progressive podcast Breaking Points and said the Platner situation was good because it was forcing Democrats to confront bigotry against white men. “The current cultural divorce between progressives and white men is so, like, stark that it is—it's just culturally, morally, ethically wrong,” Grim said. “But also just pragmatically, from a political perspective, you can't build a national party if you assume every white guy or every white guy with a deep voice who is a combat vet or whatever is, like, out to get you.”

I support the Office of Management and Budget's proposed reforms to strengthen oversight of federal grant and assistance programs and improve protections against waste, fraud, and abuse.

American taxpayers deserve confidence that federal funds are being spent responsibly and for their intended purposes. Recent reports of improper payments, fraudulent claims, and inadequate oversight have highlighted weaknesses in the current system that must be addressed. Strengthening verification requirements, improving recipient vetting, and providing agencies with greater authority to suspend or terminate funding when fraud or misuse is identified are reasonable and necessary steps.

I particularly support efforts to improve identity verification for grant applicants, increase accountability for recipients of federal funds, and ensure that agencies can regularly review ongoing awards to determine whether taxpayer dollars are being used effectively. Federal agencies should have the tools necessary to prevent fraud before it occurs rather than attempting to recover funds after they have already been lost.

The federal government has a responsibility to safeguard taxpayer resources and ensure that assistance programs operate with transparency, integrity, and accountability. These proposed reforms will help restore public trust in the grant-making process and improve stewardship of public funds.

I encourage OMB to finalize these reforms and continue pursuing measures that strengthen oversight, reduce fraud, and ensure that federal funding serves the interests of the American people.

Our large white Samoyed-husky cross, Bear, continues chewing on the dachshund toy, though he's now moved to a napping spot on the cool tile under the fan.

Bear has now fallen asleep on the remains of the stuffy daschund.
