Alderman La Spata
@aldermanlaspata
1st Ward Alderman. Mon-Fri 10 AM-6 PM at 1958 N Milwaukee Ave / 872-206-2685 / info@the1stward.com
Today, we stood with survivors of violence perpetrated by ICE and community members demanding justice and accountability. Our communities deserve to feel safe, respected, and protected from abuse of power. No one is above the law. Not even federal agents.
🚨 After being postponed due to air quality, our Summer Bike Tune-Up is back on! 🚲 Join us THIS Saturday from 10 AM-1 PM at Palmer Square Park for free tune-ups. Appointments for July 18th will be honored & other attendees will be serviced on a first-come, first-served basis. Hope to see you there!
ICYMI: Meet Me on Milwaukee is back for 2026! We're seeking volunteers to sign-up for 3-hour shifts on each event day. Register at bit.ly/mmomvol
Coming soon to Wicker Park: The city's first all-pedestrian crossing phase outside of the Loop!
The City's own audit revealed that water usage in Chicago actually decreased between 2015-2019. So why did water bills keep increasing?
This Saturday: Help us maintain our urban canopy at our annual Tree Stewardship Day! We'll be meeting at the ward office at 9AM before making our way down Milwaukee Ave. Bring gloves, appropriate clothing, a water bottle & tools if you have them. Register: www.cervistech.com/acts/console...
What were the economic impacts of the Milwaukee Ave bike lanes? Check out the full study on CDOT’s website.
Today we celebrated Goethe Elementary’s brand new field and playground! These new additions were made possible in part through the 1st Ward’s Participatory Budgeting process, reinvesting taxpayer dollars back into our community to create a safe, engaging, and high-quality outdoor space for kids.
NEXT SATURDAY: One of our most popular events of the year! Join us at Pulaski Park from 10AM-1PM for our Spring Bike Tune-Up 🚲 Appointments filled up faster than ever this year, but walk-ups will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Hope to see you there!
Know a bike lane that looks like this after it rains? Let the Committee on Pedestrian and Traffic Safety know at bit.ly/bikelaneflooding
Put simply, Complete Streets is an approach to designing and building our streets that considers everyone who uses them, regardless of age or ability. Join us next Monday to hear from CDOT on how Complete Streets elements are being used in Chicago. We’ll be in Room 201A in City Hall at 1:00 PM!
Last night we held a Rapid Response Training in the 1st Ward with PUñO. I’m so grateful to everyone who attended for their courage and solidarity, especially now.
The Northwest Side Rapid Response Team is collecting supplies to deliver to our friends in Minneapolis later this week. If you're able to donate, please drop items off at one of the collection sites listed below by 1:00 PM this Wednesday (1/28!).
I have so many feelings over the death of Renee Good: grief for her loved ones, anger at ICE, anxiety for those doing rapid response. If you need to sit with that, I understand. If you want to take action, attend tonight’s CCPSA meeting and help hold CPD accountable for cooperating with ICE.
Kicking off 2026 with some fantastic news: there were zero traffic fatalities in the 1st Ward last year. When we invest in traffic calming infrastructure, we save lives.
Join the 1st Ward's 2025 Holiday Gift Drive and help spread some cheer to local families experiencing hardships this holiday season. Learn more at the1stward.com/events/2025-holiday-drive. If you can't donate, your time is just as valuable! Join us on 12/13 from 12-4 PM for our Wrapping Mixer.
The Committee on Finance vote made it clear that we have a lot of work to do before we can pass a budget, but I’m committed to working towards a responsible, transparent budget that supports safe, stable neighborhoods for all Chicagoans.
At today’s City Council meeting, I introduced ordinances tied to the budget and an ordinance requiring any company contracting with the city to disclose any past or current work with ICE/CBP. Any company that contributes to the harm of our communities does not deserve our business.
🚨 New blog alert! Review my updated budget priorities, informed by resident feedback, at www.the1stward.com/budget-blog-17
I had the pleasure of joining WBEZ yesterday morning to discuss the proposed cuts to the library in next year’s budget. Listen to the full segment: linktr.ee/aldlaspata
Just a few more days until the final Meet Me On Milwaukee and this one is going to be spooOOooOky 👻Heads up, this month we'll be shutting down a bit earlier at 4 PM to make sure we reopen the street safely as the sun sets a bit earlier. Hope to see you out there!
The Mayor’s proposed budget allocates more money from the Corporate Fund to CPD’s mounted unit ($2.8M) than gender based violence ($0). This is deeply concerning to me.
🗣️ 1st Ward business owners: Stop by our office (1958 N. Milwaukee) and pick up your sign designating your business as an ICE-Free Zone. Find more resources at the1stward.com/ice. We’re closed tomorrow but back open on Tuesday!
Park 399 is officially open! This project was voted on by 1st Ward residents and partially funded with menu dollars.
What’s there to love about a car-free street? Everything. Check out the full video on my IG: @aldermanlaspata
Today marks the start of #WeekWithoutDriving and the forecast looks great for walking, biking, & public transit! WWD is a chance to challenge yourself to cut back on vehicle trips and try other ways of getting around. Let’s build communities that are inclusive and accessible for everyone.
We’re talking speed camera reform in committee today. Tune in right now: www.chicityclerk.com
