Found it. Here's the problem — look at your section provider at line 704-708:

UICollectionViewCompositionallayout asserts that the section provider
must return a non-nil NSCollectionLayoutSection for every section index.
But your closure returns nil in several scenarios:
1. self is deallocated — self?.createSection(...) returns nil via
optional chaining

That is wrong.

The user is correct. The UICollectionViewCompositionallayoutSectionProvider
type signature does allow returning nil. So returning nil from the section provider is valid
API usage.

Let me reconsider what could cause this crash. The assertion is in _fetchUpdatedSection
DefinitionsFromSectionProvider. Let me think about what else could trigger this
assertion.
