Resonate presents "Let's talk book bans in the United States."
45 percent of all banned books in the United States are in Florida, 36 percent in Iowa.

16 thousand book bans have been announced since 2021- over 4 thousand titles.
Why do books get banned to begin with? 61.5 percent for offensive language, 49 percent unsuited to age group, 26 percent religious viewpoint.

What content is banned? Books on race, racism, people of color, LGBT+ topics & history, sexual violence, grief, death, child abuse, mental health, etc.

Organizations fighting back:

The zinn education project powered by nonprofits Rethinking Schools & Teaching for Change- they provide free teaching materials to educators across the United States focusing on censored history.

"We Need Diverse Books" diversebooks.org - they promote books by and about marginalized groups in children's publishing.

Call to action 2026:

Vote for pro-library funding.

Learning, sharing, teaching.
This month we are focusing on sharing our one year Little Free Library experience, providing resources/free materials to counter the lack of financial literacy today, promoting summer reading programs, highlighting what so many organizations and activists are already doing and what they have already accomplished and taking action ourselves while supporting amazing organizations and asking teachers for their wishlists.

changing direction. We have never truly been the country that we have acted like we are in TV & movies. Historically, the United States has been nothing but examples of what not to do. The mean girl, the bully, the racist uncle that drinks too much. That is how the United States has been looked upon as for a long time but now especially. No one wants to be friends with us anymore. They pity us. We have escalated situations internationally to the point that we have been seen as a liability, an unhinged laughingstock to be wary of.
It is easy to feel unheard when talking solutions. Access to clean drinking water, uncontaminated food, stable shelter, healthcare, education, community support, relative public safety- without these, how can you have good mental or physical health?
"It's good to learn from your mistakes. It's better to learn from other people's mistakes."
We haven't learned from either.

The most embarrassing (at this point) pain point as a United States citizen. 4/5

The most embarrassing thing about the United States is that there are examples of tried and true ways to run countries WELL. We aren't reinventing the wheel by asking for a more respectfully structured society that puts education and environmental preservation at the forefront of our decision-making. Where the most vulnerable populations are set up to thrive and violence is low because community exists.
The United States has a long history of profits over people and needing someone to look down upon or conquer.
This has leeched into our culture.
Citizens are surprised to learn our true history and meet other people from other countries who have aced at least one thing we haven't; usually using long term forward thinking instead of making decisions based on short term profit projections.

The American Way is to cut corners, buy hopeful lotto tickets, create a gofundme for unexpected costs, having 2 jobs plus a side gig or two and being able to relate to almost every meme about burnout. It's approving another large amount towards military modifications and gutting funds for public education claiming that it isn't affordable.
We are seeing in real time what we cannot afford: a country full of chronically ill, burnt out, poorly educated, device addicted, one paycheck or disaster away from losing it all citizens. We have been conditioned to accept what is not the norm in other places.
If you do not read and cannot travel, it used to give you at least an excuse for being ignorant. Now, we have social media. There are people around the world having genuine conversations for the first time about how their normal lives are different or similar.

More than ever, citizens are hopping pricy flights out of country to get their health taken care of. Destroys the myth of third world country propaganda when Sally posts how safe she felt in Colombia getting her teeth fixed for way less than driving down the road to her own dentist to be told it was going to take her house being mortgaged to redo her teeth after an accident. Since 2020, the cracks in our ways of life were exposed in a super public way. The world turned to the Internet and found community there. By being curious, people in the United States were finding out how different everyday life is outside of the United States. How some countries thrive putting the welfare of their citizens first. No one country has it all figured out but, after centuries of published historians and scientists, there is a blueprint out there on how to do every aspect of governing the

right way. We, as citizens, just choose not to. For whatever reason, even if we protest or post opp memes, we remain nonchalant about the actions our government takes on the daily.
Whether it's settling for whatever we get at this point or just feeling helpless and like nothing is going to change, the fact still remains that we could be doing better. That there is better out there. That we deserve better as a society, as a culture.
We don't have to advocate for "handouts" because it's our taxes paying for them to begin with. We could literally restructure to the point that every decision is weighed upon whether it benefits everyone, harms no one in the present and future tense. The fact that we haven't put an older indigenous woman in the white house is proof that we think the way we are going and have been going is the right direction or at least indifferent about

Highlighted this month is SAGE- a U.S. national resource center for LBGTQ+ aging adults. In their own words, Sage is a space created for older folks who have lived authentically and with pride. To who this post reaches: You are seen, you are heard and there is community for you.

Sage National Resource Center on LBGTQ+ Aging; our objectives:
1. Create and disseminate information, educational resources, and technical assistance regarding LGBTQ+ aging
2. Develop and refine training on concerns related to cultural competence to the providers serving diverse communities.
3. Increase the capacity of LGBTQ+ older adults, families and caregivers to access services, and
4. Improve collaboration with other minority aging resource centers and network.
