Currently experimenting with using different pens with different layers to map water systems, roads, etc... this is a section of NE Los Angeles

I transform the terrain in various ways before plotting it, sometimes projecting it isometrically, exaggerating or compressing the relief, smoothing the contour lines to different degrees or leaving more of the raw topographic irregularity intact

Some other examples (name and address blurred in the first one, but in my generator / viewer program I built in the ability to indicate geocoordinates, like someone's house, a landmark, whatever)

This one is plotted on old cotton paper with Diamine Aurora Borealis fountain pen ink and a fine nib. I like what happens where the contours become very dense; from a distance they merge into fields of color but up close the nib has physically traced and furrowed each individual line into the paper

I've been experimenting with turning USGS topographic data into pen-plotted drawings. This one is the Allegheny River at the start of Route 8. I convert the elevation data into contour paths, export them as an SVG, and then draw the result with a pen plotter.
