20 fucking years. I can’t bring myself to watch the new documentaries (yes, I know how awful everything was), but I offer this:

Count me in. New Orleans is as real as it gets. But add to the reasons why we stay something called commonality. After saying goodbye to our daughter my husband and I said to each other what was now obvious: It's impossible to imagine living with a choice whether or not to immerse in the complicated combination of highs and lows that is life in New Orleans. We need to be where it happened, where our frame of reference is shared by the entire community. Where no one needs reminding and where hope and despair often mysteriously coalesce into something called grace.
