It was no coincidence that ICE was waiting for Perez on the day of his release. The Massachusetts Department of Correction, which had custody of him for all those decades, formally partners with ICE to transfer people who have finished their sentences: Since 2007, the state prison system has participated in the federal 287(g) program and, as part of its contract, regularly sends people exiting Massachusetts prisons directly into ICE custody.

In fact, Massachusetts is the only state that voted against Donald Trump in 2024, and where the governor is a Democrat, where a state agency is contracting with the 287(g) program. It’s also the only state where Democrats fully control the state government that has such an agreement.

I cant help but emphasize how massive of a shift it will be to require states to partially pay for SNAP. Removing the ability to provide food to those in need due to something out of their control is cruelty. And thats what they want.

Provisions of the Republican-backed law that President Donald Trump signed last year that go into effect in October 2027 will require states with high SNAP error rates — the percentage of benefits that are overpaid, underpaid or go to recipients who are ineligible — to begin covering some of the program’s costs. It marks a stark change for SNAP, which is solely funded by the federal government.

In an online briefing hosted by the left-leaning think tank Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, the American Academy of Pediatrics and Invest in Louisiana, speakers said Congress should use the government funding process to protect access to affordable food for American families.

Sharon Parrott, the center’s president, said that Republicans are “looking right past this emergency” and using their current budget resolution to help farmers struggling with increased costs that have resulted from Trump’s tariffs and oil prices that have been driven up by the war with Iran — but not low-income grocery shoppers.

The state Board of Registration in Medicine on July 16 revoked the right of Dr. Jacquelyn J. Starer, 72, to renew her medical license, which expired in March 2025, according to records.
In a statement, the board said it found that Starer, an Ashland resident first licensed to practice medicine in Massachusetts in 1983, “was among a crowd which stormed and breached the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021, and that she struck a Metropolitan Police Officer with her closed fist.”
Starer, who is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology as well as general health and preventive medicine, had previously entered into a voluntary agreement not to practice following her arrest in December 2022, officials said.

The brothers have legal issues
Legal filings detail a series of judgments against the Kazmis, who failed to comply with a court order and have been accused of obscuring their finances and dodging service processors as a growing list of former suppliers and franchisors sought payment.

In February, a federal judge in New Jersey ordered the Kazmis to pay over $600,000 to a fuel supplier that accused the brothers of stealing gas. The supplier alleged in court filings that it cut the brothers off after they refused to sign a new contract. But the Kazmis exploited a security lapse and gained access to the supplier’s fuel depot. Over a ten-day period in August 2021, tanker trucks absconded with more than 230,000 gallons of fuel, according to the supplier’s court filings. A judge ruled in the supplier’s favor, finding the brothers unlawfully took the gas.

The fuel supplier says it has yet to receive payment.

Syed Kazmi was hit with a $380,000 judgment two years ago in a suit brought by 7-Eleven, the convenience chain, which accused him of “dishonest, unethical, immoral” conduct while operating a franchise in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, that was flagged for unsanitary conditions that included trash issues and a rodent infestation. The company also said “tens of thousands of dollars” of cigarettes ordered from 7-Eleven on credit had gone missing.

A federal judge held a company operated by Shamikh Kazmi in contempt in 2022 in a trademark case brought by BP America.

Though BP had severed ties with Kazmi’s Diwan Petrol two years prior to the legal action, the corporation’s signage had not been removed from the gas station despite a court order to do so. The judge authorized U.S. Marshals to accompany BP workers to remove it.

A man who answered a call to a number listed for the Kazmi brothers said he was not the right person to talk to and instead directed inquiries to the Freedom Fuel Network’s website. But that website has no contact information, phone number or mailing ad…

In November 2019, two groups of legal scholars and human rights activists called on Thomson Reuters to cease providing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Palantir Technologies access to information through CLEAR, which has enabled the deportation of illegal immigrants.

The decision was a long-sought win for legislative Democrats, but in a veto letter issued Friday afternoon, Whitmer said bills were effectively overripe because they would have an effective date of April 2025.

Signing them into law now would lead to "endless litigation" and "overwrite law that has since gone into effect" while complicating the budget, Whitmer wrote.
