Following their lead, let us make our next 250 years even brighter than the last.
Limiting myself to the dead, I present here just a small, personal selection of them: all flawed, all complex, but all of them still speaking to us today.
There are signs of hope everywhere, from New York to Colorado, from Georgia to Washington, from Michigan to Maine, and from Texas to Minnesota. I draw hope and inspiration from the Americans who have fought to make this country a more just, livable, and beautiful place for all.
This Independence Day, our country turns 250 years old. If we make it to 300, I don’t believe we will be the world’s pre-eminent power any longer. But perhaps we will be a better, wiser nation than we are now.
Zohran’s speech was a beautiful paean to the power of this country to transform lives and open up new opportunities to everyone who comes here. It was patriotic, hopeful, and clear-eyed. I’m not surprised this quisling Bishop, a true heir of Charles Coughlin, hated it.
