V2 has fledged 🦅🤍 9:44am An adult came in with a fish a while later and looked high and low for the eaglet before flying off 10 minutes later. The nest and nest tree are still empty now. Big day.

V-2 was exercised his wings a lot and was airborne from branch to branch several times early this morning, and then got two fish deliveries within a couple of minutes of each other - one from each parent, I think. We also got a special close up view for a while. #VINS

V-2 is completely off-camera and has been for about 5 minutes. It’s the first time i’ve seen that. He flapping his wings a lot and then in the branches above the nest to the right for a while, and you could still see his shadow on the tree trunk, but then he completely disappeared! 🦅

The VINS eaglet this morning, about 8 weeks old.

Farmers/gardeners: what are these on my potato plants? I also have CO potato beetles and i don’t think these are a phase of those, but…? They are small and flat and when you pick them off they’re kind of hard shelled and spikey. Don’t like.

The resident male mallard on our pond this year is banded. We’ve never had a banded duck here before that we know of. (Apologies for the lo-fi photo)

May 4/May 28 This transformation happened in 24 days. It happens every year, and every year I find it more amazing than the year before. In spite of it all, incredibly good things are still happening in the woods.

Looking through the woods in early May. The ground is brown leaf litter, the trees don’t have leaves. The sky is bright but cloudy over a mountain in the distance.

Taken today from the same spot as the first photo. It’s bright green everywhere: the ferns on the ground, the leaves on the trees. The distant mountain is not visible and the bright blue sky can only be seen in spots through the leaves. 💚

I’d like to give you all a little piece of advice: It’s better not to wear boots with this type of lace hook (photo 1) when working with this type of fencing (photo 2). Somehow I have to relearn this the hard way every spring.

Green poultry net fencing, which has poly strands in 3”x4” rectangles and skinny plastic fence posts. It’s intended mainly for chicken fencing and i use it also around my garden bc it’s easy to install and move around. It’s also easy to get your bootlace hooks caught on the fencing strands, causing yourself to trip and fall over and swear in a way that would horrify my mother.

VINS eagle nest update: I don’t know, I may have hallucinated the pip yesterday… The egg looks still intact this morning. Starting to wonder if it’s a viable egg 🥺 This is day 38 (35 is expected incubation). Anyway, here’s Windsor in the morning sun.

As I was saying… April is tough. I shoveled 2-3 inches of snow off the deck this morning to feed the birds. 23°F predicted tonight and I think I will have to cover the garlic shoots in the garden. They’re hardy… but not that hardy.

This is about 1/10 of the flock of evening grosbeaks who have been here longer than a month. With the volume up you’ll hear them and get a better sense of the number of them. I love them dearly but they eat too much and i wish most of them would move along now!

Animal tracker/wildlife people: what animal does this? (Vermont, the other day). I think it is something foraging, but who and for what?

A photo of the ground in the woods, early spring, covered in leaf litter. There are many circular spots where the leaf litter is disturbed, the leaves are pushed aside and you can see the dirt underneath, but there are no discernible animal tracks.

The Big Bear, CA eaglets have hatched. Just saw the older of the two get a meal, tiny pieces of fish. It was working so hard to hold its wobbly head up! m.youtube.com/watch?v=B4-L...

It’s the last day of March and it’s 40°F and raining. Forecast says it will rain for a week… April is a tough month in Vermont. Here’s a photo from April 30 last year. Keeping my sights on this.
