Have a few hours to kill in a NB small town. Found a school playground for the kids to play at. A lot of things are prohibited at this playground and (while I think it’s overkill, ) I understand most of them but am stumped as to why sneakers are prohibited? This playground is outside on pavement.
I love a city. I love a non-car commute. I love an old elevator with exceptionally tactile buttons.
Nothing will change my mind on how great it is to take the bus (and all public transit, really)… but this bus driver is quite aggressive with their stops and my dress is very slippery against this seat so I’m spending this whole ride trying not to slip right onto the floor.
Every time I ferry/walk to work, I’m reminded that Miramichi built this entire stretch of street with a dropped curb and that has, of course, resulted in vehicles parking in the sidewalk. This was preventable.
I used to hate summer because it was too hot for me and I always felt uncomfortable. Now that my body runs cooler, I have a newfound love for summer and heat. My favourite way to soak up the sun? Laying on the trampoline and watching the clouds go by.
It’s actually wild that the City of Moncton is fine with the fact that there are no sidewalks leading into its primary family tourism area. No sidewalks into the zoo, no sidewalks into Magic Mountain, no sidewalks to the boardwalk, no sidewalks to get Beaver Tails.
Obviously I’m very proud of my son, but my heart hurts a bit for my daughter today. She is incredible and blows me away every day. I can’t wait for her to find a space and a community that will pour back into her what she pours into it.
My local public-serving Service Canada building (built in the 2010s), has no sidewalk leading into, has no bike rack or other secure bike parking, but *does* have parking on all four sides!
Traffic was backed up throughout the city but the end of the city we lived in was especially bad. Motorists were reporting that it was taking 45minutes to an hour just to move 1.5km. The traffic was backed up from French Fort Cove onto the highway.
Park sounds tonight included dozens of kids laughing and playing: running around, basketball, soccer, volleyball, badminton, scooters, bikes, slides, swings, and more. Park sights? Those same kids but also constant flurries of tree seeds landing all around.
Of course Poillievre is going to back Canada in a potential Alberta referendum. Losing 33 (mostly very safe) seats in the House would be a real hit to the Conservative Party.
Results aren’t final yet but I just texted my early congratulations to the next Mayor of Miramichi. Nobody told me how cool it would be to have your friend become mayor so you can say things like: “oh yea, I just texted the mayor”.
This is the closest I can get to Montréal at this moment, and frankly… I’ll take it.
This is a small business owner in Miramichi, talking about how there isn’t enough parking in downtown Chatham so…. we should remove the sidewalks? (Also, I have *never* had a problem getting a free parking spot within a 2 minute walk of Water St businesses). Facebook is bad for my health.
Our outgoing mayor made a post about why the Chatham library is important and this is one of comments. The importance of literacy cannot be overstated.
I feel so hopeless about Miramichi’s future. Regardless of what city councillors say, actions demonstrate they do not care about people outside of cars. At the first hint of inconvenience to cars, they do not hesitate to take space from the little ped/bike infrastructure that we have.
Haven’t seen four people look this genuinely happy together in a long time. Leaving earth might just be the trick.
A true “you don’t know what you’ve got ‘till it’s gone” was the Pizza Delight bread grilling station. Nothing quite like that bread, slathered with garlic butter and then grilled butter side down. Delicious.
My children attend a K-8 school with essentially no music/art program. No dedicated teachers, no instruments, etc. My 14yo is participating in the music festival today and reporting her absence annoys me. School sports don’t count as absences. Outside sports get special treatment. What about arts?
I haven’t been a Moncton resident for 15 years. I don’t need any more shirts. But this was still tempting.
Fake Spring and being on my bike have been so good for my mental health. Anywhoooo I looked at the forecast and the next seven days are going to be a sloggggg.
14yo wants to hang out with a friend tonight = spend some time at Starbucks and then shop at winners (450m away). Plan was to drop them off and pick up when done but friend’s parents don’t want her walking across the busy street due to traffic. Unsafe streets force car dependency.
This morning at the skating oval, there was a man who had biked to the oval, went skating, and then sat on the bench and poured himself a coffee from his thermos. Someday I hope to live in a place that invests in public infrastructure likes this, and where I don’t need to use my car to get to it.
In the last three days, my family and I have gone skating at three different public outdoor ice rinks/skating paths in the greater Moncton area. All three were in really good condition, all three were totally free, all three were a blast. I love thoughtful community spaces.
