anyway, to not erase Stokke's side of things: this wasn't a harmless joke (if that wasn't already clear).

Stokke initially tried to control the situation herself, but after being bombarded with emails and requests for photo shoots, she sought a media consultant to handle her new-found fame. She gave an interview on pole vaulting technique which was uploaded to YouTube, and it received over 100,000 views, but comments and discussion on the internet largely remained in relation to her looks. Her father, a lawyer, began to review online material to identify illegal behavior or stalkers. Reflecting on her situation, Stokke told The Washington Post "even if none of it is illegal, it just all feels really demeaning. I worked so hard for pole vaulting and all this other stuff, and it's almost like that doesn't matter. Nobody sees that. Nobody really sees me." Der Spiegel noted that Stokke had become a "sex symbol against her will". The attention affected her psychologically: she said that she found the leering "creepy and a little scary" and now took care to lock doors behind her.

Comedy sure was different in 2007!

Long-time reader Jim — who may or may not have killed a man in prison — alerted me this morning to an Internet sensation that's building a frightening head of steam: meet pole vaulter Allison Stokke (pronounced "stow-key," I believe). Hubba hubba and other grunting sounds.

Why is this particular head of steam frightening, you ask? Well, as best as I can tell from my rudimentary Internet sleuthing, Allison turned 18 less than two months ago, and she's still a senior at Newport Harbor, which last time I checked — and I check often — is a high school. Writing these kinds of posts are precisely why I keep getting mysterious, threatening voicemails from someone that sounds like Chris Hansen. "I'll get you, Ufford!" "You disgust me, sicko!" "Seriously, put some pants on." Et cetera and so on.

Oh, and there's also this: Miss Stokke is one of the best young pole vaulters in the country. She set the U.S. record for a freshman girl at 12'8", and her present personal best is a couple inches off the best high school girls mark. So, that's why I'm honoring her with a post. Because she's an exceptional athlete. Yes.

Oh, and if this YouTube interview is any indication, she takes pole vaulting so seriously that she's unable to detect sarcasm. Which is too bad, because missing sarcastic remarks ends our steamy, illicit romance before it's even begun. That, and the age difference. And the restraining order.

Images of Stokke competing in New York in early 2007 were taken by a journalist for a Californian track and field website and placed online. In May, the image was then re-posted by With Leather, a sports blog with a large male fanbase, remarking on the attractiveness of seventeen-year-old Stokke under the headline "Pole Vaulting is Sexy, Barely Legal". The photographer threatened to sue site owner Matt Ufford if he did not remove the image, but the article had already received significant attention and been posted at dozens of other websites. A tribute website to Stokke soon emerged with several images of her competing in the pole vault and, after these images spread via social media, Internet fan groups attracted thousands of followers. Within several weeks, her photos had become such an Internet phenomenon that they generated comment pieces nationally from The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times and The New York Times, and internationally from British broadcasters at the BBC, Australian daily The Sydney Morning Herald, and the German weekly Der Spiegel, in addition to more than one million search engine results. CBS also gave television coverage, using her story to highlight the dangers of the internet being used to publicly sexualize young people.

As part of a broader positive evaluation of nature, anarchists in Spain argued that there were no natural illnesses; bad social organization was understood to produce disease. To quote the influential anarchist Revista Blanca:
"Natural living cures all illnesses… It is logical to assume that future societies, which above all else will care for health in order to provide happiness, will not be composed of large cities, products of capitalist exploitation which centralizes production, but rather by colonies which will be situated where they are most beneficial for health and not where they provide the most profit."
One prominent medical figure in the anarchist movement, Dr Isaac Puente, argued that capitalism, the Church and the state had created a "race of the poor," overcome with poverty, tuberculosis and venereal disease. This "race" was not the same kind of entity talked about in German Nazi or Spanish nationalist movements but had more in common with the human race in general or the working class.

Other anarchist eugenicists include Moses Harman, American editor of the anarchafeminist journal Lucifer, the Light-Bearer, which was later renamed to The American Journal of Eugenics and taken up by his daughter Lillian. This was promoted in Emma Goldman's Mother Earth. /10

More than a year has gone by since Moses Harman saw the last number of his much-loved magazine come from the press, and sank to his well-earned rest. That number was dated Jan.-Feb., 1910. In it he said:
"If the readers of Eugenics would know more of the exceptionally courageous and wonderfully persistent battle for free speech in New York and other eastern cities, that has been fought by Emma Goldman and her few steadfast friends, they should send stamps, dimes, or dollars for copies of MOTHER EARTH. The friends of truth and justice everywhere should do what they can to make Miss Goldman's next annual tour a triumphant success."
Now MOTHER EARTH is to fill out the unexpired subscriptions to Eugenics. Those whose subscriptions have expired will received sample copies of MOTHER EARTH. I am sure that this arrangement would be satisfactory to my father, and I hope it will please his friends. He always said that he expected to continue to publish his message to the world as long as he lived, and though he hoped his magazine might continue after his death, he wanted me to feel perfectly free to make any disposition of it which might seem to me best.
It has been very hard for me to definitely give up the publication of Eugenics. My father's life and work—his publications, Lucifer and Eugenics—have been so closely interwoven with my life ever since my childhood, that it is with a mental and physical wrench that the parting is made. Yet Moses Harman was unique. His work was unique. Neither I nor anyone else could fill his place. But his work lives; he lives in the hearts, the lives of unknown numbers. Not only his children (as is promised to the "righteous") but many, many more "rise up and call him blessed."

Manuel Devaldès was infamous even among other anarchists for praising Nazi Germany's eugenic laws, much to the anger of those like fellow eugenicist anarchist Eugène Humbert. /9

The anarchist left of the 1930s did have to confront the fact that their eugenicist outlook was leading them to associate ideologically with some unsavory bedfellows. Devaldès and Humbert can be seen evaluating Nazi eugenics practices in the course of the year 1934, one year after Deavldès’s major work was published. In the May 1934 issue of La Grande Réforme, Devaldès faced squarely the Nazi plans to sterilize over four thousand people of both sexes who were deemed unfit. Devaldès refused to condemn German forced sterilizations and praised the Nazis for requiring eugenics to be part of the medical school curriculum. He cited the twenty-seven states in the United States that had passed eugenic legislation and complained that no one had criticized eugenics when practiced in the United States, but now that Hitler was carrying it out it was getting a bad name. Devaldès remained adamant that in this area the Germans were contributing to the progress of civilization. Hitler had proclaimed, reasonably so Devaldès thought, that if the church was willing to care for German defectives, fine, but the German state was tired of spending 350 marks per year for each patient. Devaldès stuck to his anticlerical guns, attacking the church rather than the Nazis for obstructing biological progress and rational sociology.

Praising the Nazis in a French anarchist paper dedicated to birth control was too much for Eugène Humbert. That summer, the editor of La Grande Réforme asked, “to what point to have beautiful children, a healthy race, if it is to lead them to the gas, machine guns and slaughterhouse of battles?” Even Humbert acknowledged that the Nazis’ eugenic marriage regulations sounded reasonable, but it was all pointless if it served a bellicose state ideology. Later that year, Devaldès seemed to respond to Humbert’s somber assessment. In a second article, he agreed that the Nazis were practicing “bellicisme eugéniste,” seeking a healthy population so as to provide the state with more cannon fodder. The proof was that the Nazis sought to increase the overall population despite the difficulty of feeding their present population. As well as being warmongerers, the Nazis were also deeply antifeminist, making women slaves of the male as of the state. Devaldès quoted Hitler that women’s only duty was to produce children. Bachelors and widows were to be taxed to help pay for large family subsidies; new couples were to get a thousand marks on marriage, which they would not have to repay if they produced four children within eight years. Because Germany lacked colonies, its expanding population guaranteed that war was on the horizon. Devaldès barely mentioned eugenics in this article, focusing instead on all the areas in which the Nazis contradicted anarchist ideals of pacifism, feminism, and birth control. Nevertheless, despite the right-wing taint the anarchists refused to jettison eugenics, seeing it as the positive counterpart of the negative practice of family limitation. Everyone should control fecundity; only the best should breed.

For instance, Eugen Relgis, a Romanian anarcho-pacifist and supporter of compulsory eugenics, was a great admirer of the German eugenicist pacifist (and anarchist sympathizer, though not an anarchist himself) Georg Friedrich Nicolai. (Passage from Wolf Zuelzer's The Nicolai Case.) /8

Among Nicolai’s visitors was the young Romanian writer Eugen Relgis. The time was July 1921, the place his consulting rooms on Kurfürstendamm. For the visitor, who had translated excerpts from the Biology of War into his native language, it was a solemn occasion. For him Nicolai was an innovator, larger than life. As Marx had replaced utopian with “scientific” socialism, so the biologist-evolutionist Nicolai had replaced utopian with scientific pacifism. His logic was simple but compelling: biology was the key to man’s future, and biological imperatives were forcing the human race to seek alternatives to war. Like Galileo he had challenged an established dogma, the pseudo-Darwinian dogma of war as an instrument of natural selection, but unlike Galileo he had not recanted. While waiting to meet him, Relgis wrote, “I imagined the man of the future, seeing him alternately as a titan dominating the machines and as a sort of demiurge with a gigantic brow, reclining in an armchair and poring over a yellowing folio.”

Vegetarian diets and sudden outbursts of violence each sought to purify and reorder the anarchist community. By divesting themselves of intoxicants and foods deemed unhealthy, the naturists were setting themselves apart from the unredeemed members of the population. Anarchist assailants seemed to be sowing disorder, yet they too were attempting to remove sources of disorder from the body politic, thereby restoring it to health.

The desire to purify society, positively by healthy living and negatively by limiting the population through eugenics and violence, reinforced anarchist emphasis on sound bodies and natural balance that was seen as a necessary corrective to the seriously imbalanced society in which they lived.

[Rirette Maîtrejean] described the “tragic bandits” of the Bonnot gang as refusing to eat meat or drink wine, preferring plain water. Her humorous comments reflected the practices of the “naturist” wing of individualist anarchists who favored a simpler, more “natural” lifestyle centered on a vegetarian diet. In the 1920s, this wing was expressed by the journal Le Néo-Naturien, Revue des Idées Philosophiques et Naturiennes. Contributors condemned the fashion of smoking cigarettes, especially by young women; a long article of 1927 actually connected cigarette smoking with cancer! Others distinguished between vegetarians, who foreswore the eating of meat, from the stricter “vegetalians,” who ate nothing but vegetables. An anarchist named G. Butaud, who made this distinction, opened a restaurant called the Foyer Végétalien in the nineteenth arrondissement in 1923. Other issues of the journal included vegetarian recipes. In 1925, when the young anarchist and future detective novelist Léo Malet arrived in Paris from Montpellier, he initially lodged with anarchists who operated another vegetarian restaurant that served only vegetables, with neither fish nor eggs. Nutritional concerns coincided with other means of encouraging health bodies [sic], such as nudism and gymnastics. For a while in the 1920s, after they were released from jail for antiwar and birth-control activities, Jeanne and Eugène Humbert retreated to the relative safety of the “integral living” movement that promoted nude sunbathing and physical fitness, which were seen as integral aspects of health in the Greek sense of gymnos, meaning nude. This back-to-nature, primitivist current was not a monopoly of the left; the same interests were echoed by right-wing Germans in the interwar era. In France, however, these proclivities were mostly associated with anarchists, insofar as they suggested an ideal of self-control and the rejection of social taboos and prejudices.

Appearing before a court on April 20, 1916, Goldman framed her defense for birth control in the classic eugenicist claims of quality over quantity. She told the judge, her aims are to inform women "by what means to bring children who are of quality to the race, instead of quantity into the world." Emma Goldman, in fact, aligned eugenic motherhood with love, which characterized the future healthy mother in white middle-class terms. According to Goldman, "Woman no longer wants to be a party to the production of a race of sickly, feeble, decrepit, wretched human beings who have neither the strength nor the moral courage to throw off the yoke of poverty and slavery. Instead she desires fewer and better children, begotten and reared in love and through free choice; not by compulsion, as marriage imposes."

Looking back, it's embarrassing to recognize the degree to which my intellectual curiosity those first two years of college paralleled the interests of various women I was attempting to get to know. Marx and Marcuse so I had something to say to the long-legged socialist who lived in my dorm; Fanon and Gwendolyn Brooks for the smooth-skinned sociology major who never gave me a second look; Foucault and Woolf for the ethereal bisexual who wore mostly black. As a strategy for picking up girls, my pseudo-intellectualism proved mostly worthless; I found myself in a series of affectionate but chaste friendships.
