John Brown’s Noose:
John Brown was hanged at Charles Town on December 2, 1859. He immediately became a folk hero in the North but was demonized in the South. Items associated with the raid and Brown’s hanging have been extremely prized ever since. During the Civil War, most soldiers who traveled through Charles Town sought souvenirs related to Brown. Enterprising townspeople were more than happy to oblige, even if it meant stretching the truth a little. Within months, people all over the world believed they had pieces of the rope and scaffolding used for the hanging.

The authenticity of John Brown’s noose is a mystery historians may never solve. West Virginian Boyd Stutler, one of the foremost John Brown authorities, believed the rope seen here was the one used to hang the famed abolitionist. However, Stutler discovered that numerous people claimed to own the actual rope, including a friend of the Brown family, a former Harpers Ferry Armory guard, and John Avis, who worked at the jail where Brown was held before he was hanged.
Perhaps the most intriguing piece of information is a letter written by Louisa Williamson, the wife of an undertaker’s assistant in Brooklyn, New York. Brown’s body had been shipped in a coffin from Charles Town to be buried on his family’s property in upstate New York. On December 8, 1859, six days after Brown’s hanging, Williamson wrote to her brother, describing the condition of Brown’s body. In the letter, she explained the undertaker had cut the rope into one-inch sections and distributed them.

Whether the noose in this display is authentic or not, it remains a powerful symbol of sacrifice to a greater cause.
