We had a small group of Aussies at our bar, and they were stars of the show (My video won’t process, but they joined in on the U-S-A chant at full time)
We didn't get in trouble or asked to stop, IIRC nobody ever came back at all to ask what we were doing, which was surprising because Fig management was frequently abrasive. Anyway, I forget how the show ended probably because of all the Coronas. But it was on the best things I've ever done.
"If you podcast, they will come." The group started getting bigger and bigger, because after folks did their segment, they stuck around. We eventually took over almost the entire back end of the pool area. I was emboldened to ask the bar if they could turn down the Thievery Corporation a bit.
The guys showed up and the plan we came up with was to just start recording, and because we knew so many people would be at the Fig, just find people and rotate them in. Garnett was such a good host he could seamlessly handle the constant swapping. Jason/Cesar/1UP Show guys were there to film!
When I got there, it was still pretty empty and nobody was in the back. I found a power outlet on the far end, plugged in a strip and covertly started setting up gear. Didn't ask anyone at the hotel, just went for it. The music was pretty loud so I tried to find the best possible spot.
We got it done and packed and had everything shipped to LA. There was no solid plan (rarely was for us), other than setup the gear in the 1UP booth's infamous "bubble," that had zero ventilation and horrific sound. We did the first shows there and gave it our best. But I wanted more...
At the time, we were guests in the 5th floor studio with Ziff's Tech show (forget the name, the one with Patrick Norton). They were cool and accommodating, but all the recording gear was theirs and while they didn't necessarily resent our presence, we were lowest-priority.
E3 2006 was the first one for 1UP Yours, we were just coming off the "Horse Armor" episode in April where we cemented the cast and the blueprint for the show (Horse Armor episode recording, pictured)
