Lib Dem Councillor, Bramcote Ward Broxtowe BC. Scientist, father, atheist, cyclist. Middle age fat bloke. I block racists, bigots and idiots. If I block you choose your category Views mine and do not relate to my employer.
I broke my 5 years cycle commute record last night at 53:19 (usually takes ~60mins) via longer route route that uses Wilford Bridge. This maximises segregated routes (only 35% of 19.7km route). Notts CC have built a cycle route beside ring road south of the Trent (driving via ring-road is ~16km)
Fair enough, I'm sensitive to this after a FB row with someone saying "windfarms have concrete foundations we should burn more coal". Picture is closed Radcliffe on Soar Coal PS, near my home which was not carbon free in construction and operation. The idea we can avoid impacts is skypie.
Just been over the Nottingham Waterside Bridgefor walkers and cyclists for the 1st time. Thronging with people on bikes and foot. Proving every "white elephant" comment immediately superfluous. A fantastic improvement to our city. We'll done all who made it happen
Literally this. Photo Radcliffe-on-Soar UK last coal PS, closed Autumn 2024. There are petitions to retain this visual scar on the landscape (sterilising hectares from redevelopment) . Same voices decry windfarms and forecast power cuts when it closed (which never happened). They are thick.
At TU Delft Netherlands for work. There are a lot of cars here, but proper bike lanes everywhere, bikes having priority on side streets, regular trains late into the night, a tram line about to open through the campus. So you have proper choices. Weather is still England levels of grim though.
I might as well admit I'm the superhero alter ego of Bruce Wayne. Finally been rumbled. Didn't claiming to live down the road from Wollaton Hall not give the game away?
I was standing still taking a picture of Brunel's Clifton Suspension Bridge. Somehow slipped and somehow, instead of falling on my backside looking stupid, snapped my fibula so loudly that the bloke who ran over to help heard it snap. Now have an ankle full of metal
Ride from Nottingham in September to see the new Bomber Command memorial statue of a Lancaster Bomber between Newark-on-Trent and Lincoln, so went on to Lincoln Cathedral. I don't think I've ever cycled 80km before. Took train home! Completed 2400km for 4th year running, 29% commuting.
2017 I hit a boulder/rut on a track at speed (no vehicle involved) went over handlebars, hit the ground hard & braked the bike with my face. I had serious soft tissue injuries requiring many stitches but I'm certain my helmet saved me from a fractured skull. Your choice but I always use a helmet.
Bravo to Rushcliffe Borough for prosecuting the company that flytipped that awful mess. I hope that they also prosecute the people who flytipped on the edge of Clifton at the end of December. westbridgfordwire.com/nottingham-c...
2 photos today. 1: Curse of flytipping by Clifton highlighting some people are vile. 2: Closed coal power station at Ratcliffe-on-Soar, literally the same age as me, no longer polluting and awaiting demolition. Things can get better. We just have to care and try harder. 5/5
My #cyclecommute. Only navigating Greater #Nottingham by bike does this routing make sense. All because the Tory majority on Notts CC are so car brained they can't believe anyone would want to cycle round the ring-road. (Yes I could go via Ruddington but it's longer and more dangerous than this).
But it is a profoundly evil bridge. I was standing looking at it in 2017 by the observatory, somehow slipped and spent 8 weeks in plaster with a broken fibula which had to be screwed back together. Definitely the bridge wot done it, not me just being clumsy. The rehab got me cycling.
This is my employers wonderfully simple bit of cycling infrastructure. A cheap lean-to shed and waste heat from a lab makes a great drying room. Dry kit really improves cycling home.
At #AIUK2024 in Westminster talking Environmental Digital Twins and looking for ideas for improving implementation of Data Science in the geosciences.
