The Anishnaabek Caucus of the Michigan Democratic Party condemns Governor
Gretchen Whitmer’s decision to grant a permit to Enbridge to build an oil pipeline tunnel
through the Straits of Mackinac. This permit will result in the destruction or removal of
the graves of Anishnaabe ancestors, extend the life of a pipeline that is presently
trespassing on the Bad River Indian Reservation, and reward a foreign company that is
responsible for the largest oil spill in Michigan’s history.
The Michigan Democratic Party (MDP) works to ensure that all people are represented
in our political process, and works to champion working people in every corner of our
state. Since 2020, the MDP has adopted three separate resolutions calling for the
removal and decommissioning of Enbridge’s Line 5 pipeline – citing the company’s poor
track record. The MDP approved a resolution to “Improve Burial Site Protection Laws”
in 2022. This year, the MDP approved a resolution “In Support of Michigan’s Biological
Diversity, Wilderness Heritage, and Native American Relationships,” in which it resolved
to “foster relationships with our Native American nations.”
Governor Whitmer’s decision to extend the life of Enbridge’s Line 5 pipeline is contrary
to the consistent positions of the MDP to foster relationships with Native Americans in
Michigan, protect their burial sites, and to decommission the Line 5 pipeline. Moreover,
this decision is contrary to the commitments Governor Whitmer made to the tribal
members and tribal leaders who worked hard to support her election. The Governor’s
decision will only reinforce the distrust between the 12 federally recognized Tribes and
the State of Michigan.
As MDP members, we expect our elected leaders and the MDP to keep their word. As
the members of the MDP Anishnaabek Caucus, we demand better from our candidates
on the ballot in 2026.
We call upon all Democrats on the ballot in the State of Michigan to immediately take
