Newham Bookshop facing 32% rent increase with £20K due immediately
Newham Bookshop is run by a company with no shareholders and paying no dividends. We just about break even and keep our running costs to a minimum. We work with a small staff and a small
group of volunteers.
But remember what we do: we bring books, authors and the joy of reading to the community of Newham. We support nurseries and schools. We support the excellent Newham libraries with many of their activities. We encourage and support many local authors.
We always support World Book Day. This year we distributed 1,800 free books - paid for by us - to Newham primary school children.
Our friend and popular children's author Michael Rosen recently celebrated his 80th birthday by visiting the Bookshop and signing copies of his books for the 250 happy people who attended.
We cannot afford this increase proposed by Newham Council which would put the future of Newham Bookshop in jeopardy.
We are writing to Forhad Hussain, Mayor of Newham, to make our case.
We are also telling Sir Stephen Timms MP, Uma Kumaran MP, James Asser MP, Clir Lakmini Shah, Cabinet Member for Children, Education and Communities and Clir John Gray, Statutory Deputy Mayor.
