That last result was particularly unexpected for a metal-poor Local Group galaxy. 🤯 And the story isn't over yet! Hubble finished observing NGC 6822 for us yesterday. Can't wait to combine the new HST data with these JWST observations. 🔭✨ Here is a sneak peek - hot off #HST 🤩

NGC 6822 in the #JWST wavelengths. ✨ Beyond the pretty picture, the catalogue revealed some surprises: ✨ ~870,000 stars detected ✨ A JWST colour–dust production relation for carbon stars. ✨ Evidence that oxygen-rich stars, not carbon stars, dominate dust production in NGC 6822.

A dense field of stars with clouds of gas and dust billowing across it. The clouds are patchy and wispy, dense and glowing parts obscuring the centre of the image. Bright galaxies with various shapes and sizes shine through the gas and stars.

Take That at Hampden (the home of Scottish football) on the night of Scotland Playijg in the opening match. The perfect start to a long night. So many Scottish bucket hats in equall amounts of pink cowboy hats. Instead of "one more song" it was #noScotlandnoParty to get n encore.

A spectacular croud watching a Take That Cricus. With a mechanical elephant coming out of the ground. There are lots of people in the croud wearing scotland bucket hats.

Reading the RAS demographic survey for 2023. 🔭 Rather surprised that there is some major difference in JWST usage between genders give the dual anonymous proposal proces.

Stats in a survey 10% of women while 20% of men use JWST and SDSS.

WR 140. A pink star with 17 rings expanding outwards like a tree. These dust rings only appear on one side and are caused by a binary companion orbiting every 8 years.

Very proud supervisor moment, with Conor Nally awarded #HST time to observe the bar of NGC 6822 with WFC3/IR medium-band filters to match our #JWST footprint.  This was the first proposal he had written and was the only opportunity to get this data! 🔭🧪

The bar of the irregular galaxy NGC 6822 observed with JWST. This is a densely packed star field, with many red stars present. There is a small patch of diffuse red emission, which is a site of star formation called Spitzer I. There is a very small clump of white resolved stars to the left of this patch which is the globular cluster, Hubble VII.

Here is one of my JWST MIRI MRS spectral plots. This did not make the final paper cut but I love this as it shows how great the MRS spectra match Spitzer for broad features, but knocks Spitzer's socks off with the emission lines and low contrast features detected. Science and progress in action! 🔭🧪

The mid-infrared spectra (Intensity as a function of wavelength) of a planetary nebular as observed by Spitzer at low and high-resolution and the JWST MRS.
The spectra rise to the red (longer wavelengths) and have broad features from SiC dust and PAHs and many sharp narrow features from atomic emission lines. These are more numerous and narrower in the MRS spectra.

We have detected brown dwarfs for the first time in another galaxy. These are failed stars 15 to 75 times the size of Jupiter. As a bonus to the amazing science the image is gorgeous too! 🔭 esawebb.org/news/weic2425/
