It's an aesthetic... People would lose their religion if they were around in the mid/early 00s to see the hype. Even the late 90s. Everybody and their aunt had the straitjacket and muzzle in their character/sona's wardrobe. One for each day of the week if you were Furry or in the ZIM fandom.
