gamedev & synthesizers // currently working on GRIST: a hyper-capitalist nightmare
i don't want to go to OTT with it, but the flash that happens when you get hit seems a good candidate
Added a selective emission channel, it's pretty subtle atm but i can add a glow effect to individual glyphs, for lasers/fire/etc. Zoomed in pic to show detail.
little sketching this morning thinking about what i might do with the grist engine in the future. this is "billionaire bunker diving simulator", a game in which you raid dead billionaire's bunkers for clean drinking water, blood plasma, and crop seed.
local takeaway has started doing chicken parmagiana and what the heck is going on here
i'm sorry but this is so fucking funny. remind me again of how centrist democrats did in the last general?
had this negative-space pattern sitting around for so long i'm stoked to finally have it as a scrolling animation. got me to tidy up the background code too so it will be easier to make bgs built out of premade components going forward. most of them so far have just been fancy noise lookups
Working up some new audio ideas, playing with a 0-coast, into the Makenoise Strega for smearing delay then the output of that into an offscreen mercury X that heavily filters the input before it hits a long reverb chain with some additional filter modulation and chorusing.
the different shaders zoomed in. the addition of a light noise in the pixel shader really gives a nice texture imo. also screws up gif encoding lol
just found this image of when i started development on Grist - isolating to care for a child with covid, on my old laptop with the keyboard that dies periodically, in a tiny room with no desk or table. just mucking about making little ascii people to a turn-base against each other...
good catch. they were both ads, i did get a clip from a friend's post and it had a different id. seems fixed now.
in another win for vibe coding and mandatory LLM targets, facebook is showing guids in the post headers.
I just released my sci-fi hexcrawler GRIST to early access this morning. It's been a long road to get here but having it out now is quite invigorating. It's a mashup of old-school RPGs with boardgames like Mage knight, Arkham Horror etc.
it's 1:40am and i'm shipping early access in less that 12 hours. while there's only 1 main boss to start with*, i'm pleased to report that it wiped the floor with me and ended the fight at full health. As I've just spent all my free time lately trying to solo Malenia this is 100% perfect let's gooo
My silly little sci-fi hexcrawler is releasing to early access in like 9 days! Inspired by the MageKnight boardgame, it also pulls from JRPGs, visual novels, and even Monster Hunter - pick a target and track it through the Megacities, tailoring your party as you go in order to defeat the nightmare.
The shooter prototype has turned out to be pretty entertaining. This ship uses its exhaust as a weapon, hence spinning it in circles trying to defend from the swarmers.
Each ship (3 atm) has a fixed primary weapon. A number of secondary weapons, eg. Homing Missiles here, are acquired during each run. Tractor beam will be used to grab pickups, undertake "move item" tasks, and capture enemy ships. You can even drag asteroids around and use them as weapons.
i burnt out slightly on working through card upgrades in grist so took a couple of days to work on this shooter instead. it's kinda fun, think survivors-like but with more emphasis on movement. And a tractor beam.
The old prototype this is built on had a tractor beam for picking things up and dragging them around. I found you can use it to give XP drops a little momentum, which makes them easier to pick up.
Running on steamdeck I can get about 4500 physics entities before it starts dropping frames. A few obvious optimizations I can make in collision testing that would boost that number
taking a sidequest this afternoon and mucking about with this thrust x survivors idea
youtube music coming through with the paid placements lol bts, here, really?
