The opening of Rights of Man has Paine dunking upon Edmund Burke relentlessly and without mercy. A masterpiece

There is scarcely an epithet of abuse to be found in the English language, with which Mr. Burke has not loaded the French Nation and the National Assembly. Everything which rancour, prejudice, ignorance or knowledge could suggest, is poured forth in the copious fury of near four hundred pages. In the strain and on the plan Mr. Burke was writing, he might have written on to as many thousands. When the tongue or the pen is let loose in a phrenzy of passion, it is the man, and not the subject, that becomes exhausted.

Dr. Price had preached a sermon on the 4th of November, 1789, being the anniversary of what is called in England the Revolution, which took place 1688. Mr. Burke, speaking of this sermon, says: "The political Divine proceeds dogmatically to assert, that by the principles of the Revolution, the people of England have acquired three fundamental rights.

1. To choose our own governors.
2. To cashier them for misconduct.
3. To frame a government for ourselves."
Dr. Price does not say that the right to do these things exists in this or in that person, or in this or in that description of persons, but that it exists in the whole; that it is a right resident in the nation. Mr. Burke, on the contrary, denies that such a right exists in the nation, either in whole or in part, or that it exists anywhere; and, what is still more strange and marvellous, he says: "that the people of England utterly disclaim such a right, and that they will resist the practical assertion of it with their lives and fortunes." That men should take up arms and spend their lives and fortunes, not to maintain their rights, but to maintain they have not rights, is an entirely new species of discovery, and suited to the paradoxical genius of Mr. Burke.

Here is a conundrum. While stock exchanges across the world react nervously to the onslaught on Iran, the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange is booming. Here is another: while millions of people in the region dread the US-Israeli military operation and its consequences, Israeli society is jubilant. According to the latest polls, 93 per cent of the Jewish population support the war. Writing in Yedioth Ahronoth, one journalist captures the euphoric mood:

In his first statement since the joint U.S.-Israel airstrikes on Iran, Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada supports American efforts to stop that country from developing a nuclear weapons program.

The statement includes no criticism of what American and Israeli forces have carried out today.

"Canada supports the United States acting to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and to prevent its regime from further threatening international peace and security," Carney said in the written statement just sent to reporters travelling with him in India.

With its relentless positivity and rustic affectations, this music has unsurprisingly become associated, in retrospect, with cringe millennial consumption culture. It is the music of sanitized, late-corporate-hipster taste: vests and trilbies, artisanal pickles, epicsauce burgers you order from a chalkboard. But it soon lost even that bit of residual crunch and just became something even more generic—“pure, distilled H&M black friday 2012 commercial music,” in the words of one YouTube comment on a recent parody of this style. We've known it for years, but this is another example of how Silicon Valley isn't capable of inventing anything new. Ask them to rethink transit and they invariably reproduce some form of bus; ask them to imagine a future for humanity and the best they can imagine is the Reapers from Mass Effect

Philosopher Derek Shiller develops this perspective in arguing that

...our resources are finite, and the same resources that might allow human beings to live … could be more effectively spent on creating and sustaining artificial creatures. When that becomes the case, the beneficent thing to do is to choose that our children be artificial, rather than natural.

He concludes that we should then “engineer our extinction so that our planet’s resources can be devoted to making artificial creatures with better lives.”

We must call this out for what it is: pro-extinctionism. The biological transhumanism of Thiel and the digital eugenics of Altman, Faggella, Yudkowsky, and the others—all of these views aim to supplant the human species with some kind of successors, which would then proceed (on the most popular view) to plunder Earth’s remaining resources and launch itself into space to conquer the universe. This is overtly pro-extinctionist, and given that some of the most powerful people in one of the most powerful centers of society—Silicon Valley—accept it, we must conclude that pro-extinctionism is not a fringe ideology, but closer to the mainstream.
