Asylum Matters
@asylummatters
Campaigning collaboratively, locally and nationally, to transform asylum in the UK.
Congratulations to everyone celebrating A Level results day - especially to the teenage refugees across the country who have been collecting their grades. It's a good day to remember the brilliant things that happen when people are allowed to rebuild their lives 🧡 www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
The solutions to the housing crisis are clear: and they're the same for everyone. We've joined 50 refugee orgs in telling Andy Burnham it's time to do what's needed to get everyone housed safely - including people seeking sanctuary. Read about what he could do here:👇 inews.co.uk/news/council...
The new EHCR code which comes into force today puts trans people seeking sanctuary at risk. And it's part of an attack on trans rights coming from some of the very same forces that demonise & marginalise people seeking asylum. Solidarity with all those fighting it. www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news...
Talking about safe routes means nothing if you're increasing deadly border violence at the same time. Share our blueprint for an asylum system that works with your MP now and show our new PM it's time to stop border violence and start saving lives: fightforasylumrights.org/give-the-new...
Our thoughts are with the loved ones of four people who died this week trying to reach safety in the UK. We don't know their names or what their hopes were for life in the UK. But we know they deserved better. And we know their deaths must not be ignored. In their names, we must save future lives.
75 years since the Refugee Convention was signed, refugee rights are under more threat than ever in the UK. If we want more than 75 years, we have to fight for them. Send your MP a plan for an asylum system that keeps the Refugee Convention alive NOW: fightforasylumrights.org/give-the-new...
Hostility isn't working - and everyone can see it. Government after Government has tried making the asylum system crueller, and left it more broken than ever. But there's a better way. With 200+ refugee orgs, we've sent Andy Burnham a blueprint for a system based in both evidence and welcome.
🚨 LAST DAY to object to the expansion of Campsfield Immigration Removal Centre 🚨 The Government wants to expand immigration detention - but there's still time to object. Object to the Campsfield plan TODAY, July 24, and by August 6 for Haslar. Guides at: righttoremain.org.uk/campsfieldex...
Reform UK councillors tried to scrap Birmingham's City of Sanctuary Status. A status that means welcome. That means helping communities thrive. That means kindness. We're pleased to say the motion failed and Birmingham remains a City of Sanctuary 🧡 www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/midland...
Three years of a policy that fails all of us. But it doesn't have to be like this. The camps must close. New camps must be cancelled. We can build an asylum system that works better for all of us - but we can't do that by shutting people away in barracks. #CommunitiesNotCamps
Three years of wasting taxpayer money on performative cruelty. (4/7)
Wethersfield asylum camp opened three years ago today. That's three years of added trauma for people who've survived war and torture, forced to share squalid barrack rooms with strangers. Three years of isolating people away from communities. (1/7) inews.co.uk/news/mental-...
📰⬆️Disinformation and misleading news stories are on the rise. If this worries you, we have a webinar for you! Develop the tools you need to have productive conversations about immigration and violence against women. 📆 Tuesday 14 July ⏰ 1-2pm 📍 Online us02web.zoom.us/webinar/regi...
More than 15,000 people have signed this petition, set up by refugees in the West Midlands, demanding an end to hostile settlement plans that mean decades of limbo for refugees. Here's why one person signed - add your name now and tell us your reason for signing you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/do...
These harmful camps don't just fail refugees - they fail communities and taxpayers too. The cost of this cruelty is eye-watering. Instead of warehousing refugees in retraumatising military camps - house people in humane accommodation within communities. #CommunitiesNotCamps
Government has announced it is doubling down on the failed experiment of warehousing people seeking safety in retraumatising camps and barracks. Despite these harmful large-scale sites costing 5x more than humane accommodation within communities. #CommunitiesNotCamps www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
With a new PM on the way, here's a message they need to hear: leaving refugees stuck in limbo is cruel, counterproductive, and it benefits no one. Sign the petition now to tell whoever forms our new Government that they must let people settle: you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/do...
What a week! From community street parties to radio appearances, we've been out celebrating courage this Refugee Week. And we've been demanding courage from our leaders: the courage to build a better asylum system, to Lift the Ban and let people work, to build safe routes and let them really settle.
The courage to leave your home. The courage to rebuild a life. The courage of every refugee is worth celebrating, and this Refugee Week we've done just that. But let's also think about the courage refugees shouldn't have to show.
This #RefugeeWeek, we stand #WithRefugees This Refugee Week, we’re celebrating the courage it takes to seek sanctuary, to rebuild your life in a new country. And we're demanding courage from those in power, to speak up for the principle of sanctuary. Join us. #Courage
Alongside women's rights experts, we've been calling out the weaponsiation of concern about violence against women & girls to excuse racist violence. Today is a good day to highlight the scale of domestic violence arrests among men who claimed to be "defending" women in the 2024 anti-migrant riots.
A profound injustice has taken place in our courts today. Two men fleeing war-torn countries were imprisoned for 'endangering lives at sea' - while our Government continues to make policies it knows kill people in our channel. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
Racist violence on our streets doesn't appear from nowhere. When our leaders refuse to stand up for sanctuary and migration, when they let social media companies profit from division, they put people in danger. Our communities must come together in solidarity - and demand better from our leaders.
🚨 UNLAWFUL asylum accommodation policy ignored risks to torture survivors, court finds 🚨 Forcing survivors to share rooms with strangers does huge harm. It's vital these vulnerable groups are protected. But the reality is, no one seeking safety should be housed barracks or converted hotels. 🧵
People seeking asylum want to work. Work means dignity, independence, and a chance to become part of the local community. Hear from people in their own words explaining why it's time to lift the ban 👇
Here's what we know: in every single community in the UK, there are people who are kind, hopeful and welcoming. This week they'll be making that hope and welcome extra visible - but it's there every day. What give you hope in your community?
The King's Speech continues the failing approach of attacking people trying to put down roots in the UK. Denying people settlement & security won't improve life for anyone - it's clear voters can see that. Here's more on the legislation and what it means: freemovement.org.uk/immigration-...
Refugee voices are being heard in the House of Lords! We've always known that banning people seeking asylum from work is bad for all of us - now we just need the Government to listen. So we headed to the House of Lords to present crucial evidence that it's time to Lift The Ban.
