As an asylum rights organisation, we know trans people seeking asylum already face disbelief, unsafe housing, and difficulties accessing vital health care. A code which makes it easier to exclude trans people from services and could force them to declare their biological sex could make this even worse.
The code also risks effectively segregating trans people in public life. Making people feel unwelcome, afraid, and unsure if they’ll even be able to access basic facilities like toilets.
For trans people seeking sanctuary, this sort of segregation will make healing and rebuilding a new, safe life here much more difficult."

We've got years of evidence showing what increasing border enforcement does.
Exploiters push all the risk onto people seeking safety, which means smaller, more overcrowded boats, rushed crossings at more dangerous times and from more dangerous locations.
They force vulnerable people to hold the tiller and steer the boat, so they are criminalised while the people putting them at risk profit.

The new PM is gesturing at the idea of “safe routes” while talking about “increasing enforcement activity”.
We know in practice that means more state-sponsored violence towards refugees including children at the border.
It shows he either doesn’t understand the problem or hasn’t yet got the courage to do what would actually work.

Our thoughts are with the loved ones of four people who died this week trying to reach safety in the UK. We don't know their names or what their hopes were for life in the UK. But we know they deserved better. And we know their deaths must not be ignored. In their names, we must save future lives.
