Heatwave on the Canal

The canal crackles
With the incessant
Sun stare -
A malevolent yellow
Unblinking,
Unclouded.
A harsh light,
A mercury sting
Reflects from the
Still, empty water.
The swans have gone.
And the ducks too,
And the lone heron that
Stood, statuesque.
Unperturbed.
Where are the anglers?

Gone too.

No more
Afternoons of tranquil
Somnolence,
Radios tuned
To Test Match Special,
Hoping the fish don't bite.
'Let me rest.'

And the joggers
Only emerge in
The first light
And twilight.
Taking shortlived
Cool breaths.
Slow, languid
Strides, grateful
Not to be gasping
In the Zenith rays,
Throats singed with
Every inhalation.

Where are the dog walkers,
The cyclists,
The ramblers,
The amblers?
Summer stalwarts.

Gone too.

I pause, seeking shade
Under the baked red
Brick bridge.
The grass reduced
To a beige whisper.
The water invites,
But it doesn't entice.

No more tomfoolery
Seeing how far across
We could jump.
Home drenched
Covered in mud
And reeds.
And a scolding before tea.

Invites to board the
Narrow boats with
Mr and Mrs Henry.
Slices of Battenburg and
A glass of lemonade.
Ah, Mr and Mrs Henry.

They've gone too.
The canal is a memory.
Cool. Revitalising.
But now,
Cinders and kindling,
Nature exhausted,
Where even the shadows
Cower and quiver.
Where is our summer?

Gone.

And only the sun
Doesn't seem to mind.

I lived on Hong Kong as a boy, have spent years living and working in Indonesia and Malaysia, as well as travelling extensively in Asia. With the exception of mosquitoes, the heat & humidity in the UK is, IMO, worse. Covered in prickly heat. Lovely. Anyway, to bed. To sweat. #heatwave #uk

In Brexit we Rust

10 years ago
The White Cliffs crumbled.
Pounded by incessant
Waves of jingoism.
Leave! Leave!
Brexit! Brexit!
'Take back control!'
This country
Is reversing.
And hasn't stopped

Backs turned to Europe.
Our friends left to stare at
Britannia stubbornly ruling
Her own waves.
I cast my vote
To remain tethered,
'Stronger together!'
But the result
Cast us adrift.
A result where all that
Remained was to
Curse a dejected
Zut alors!
Gott Verdammt!

So keep your butter mountains
Lap up your wine lakes and
Straighten your bananas.
You're bananas, so many said.
And what did the fruit
Of 10 years of isolation yield?

Freedom of movement, denied.

Our hopes quashed.
Rotten, sour, spoiled.

Leave! Leave!
We did.
On our terms.
Of our own making.
Erecting a fence
Where the grass on
The other side

Sunflowers
(Forget-Me-Nots)

A land of sunflowers.
Bloodied, but unbowed.
Standing tall under
A darkening sun.

Unyielding, undeterred,
Stoic, resolute.
Now wind swayed
And battle scarred.

Charred, riven, torn.
Seed strewn into
Churned soil on
Untended fields.

For now, dormant,
While the world forgets.

Yet, one day the sunflowers
Will grow again.
