My response to a post asking atheists if an historical Jesus existed at all.

An actual individual in the early 1st century CE likely did lead a social-theological reform movement and apocalyptic cult that became Christianity, I think. Possibly woven with threads of tradition pulled from other figures, such as "John the Baptist". But it's hard to say how much of even the corpus of mundane claims about what he said or did are factual. We frequently attribute—without, or even despite evidence—words and actions to people with whom we imagine they fit better (e.g. Evelyn Beatrice Hall's quote attributed to Voltaire, George Washington and the cherry tree incident, etc). The temptation towards more compelling storytelling/moralising can make an historical core almost unrecognisable. And we didn't have as much paper trail back then, let alone from back then, to verify.
