Short abstract
This talk will attempt to discuss some of the philosophical issues concerning the translation of ideas from "East" to "West"
and vice versa. Eastern and Western philosophy are closely connected. My interest lays in how these links are expressed. As an example, the Japanese term "tetsugaku", coined by Nishi Amane to translate Greek "philosophia" shows this exchange. It relates to "ongaku" ("music") through "on", meaning "sound," which echoes the Greek "on", meaning "being."

“Auditioning" Ontology: Ambient Realism and the Practice of Critique

Abstract: This essay develops ambient realism as a critical reorientation of contemporary realism that challenges the persistence of anthropocentric and ocularcentric assumptions in Western metaphysics. I argue that philosophy's inherited reliance on visual metaphors - presence, access, and disclosure - continues to structure realist discourse even within post-Kantian and posthumanist frameworks. The argument begins by identifying a scopic inheritance: a long-standing alignment of vision with cognition and ontological access that encourages a model of reality composed of stable objects presented to a perceiving subject. This visual paradigm also stabilises familiar binary oppositions - object and relation, static and dynamic, being and becoming - by privileging spatial form and perceptual mastery. In response, the essay proposes "auditioning" ontology as a methodological shift that foregrounds sonority, resonance, and affect as alternative registers for articulating being. Rather than replacing sight with sound, auditioning names a philosophical attunement to vibration and relational interaction - processes through which entities register one another beyond the frame of visual representation. Adjacent to this approach is the concept of ontological aphonia, which designates a deliberate suspension of the demand for epistemic mastery.
Drawing on the work of Martin Heidegger, Jean-Luc Nancy, affect theory, and contemporary sound studies, the essay reconceives being as relational, dynamic, and excessive of representation. These insights culminate in the formulation of ambient realism: an ontological orientation in which entities persist neither as isolated objects nor as dissolved relations, but as participants in a transjective field of resonant interaction - ambience. Encouraging Action by Adjusting the Language of the world scientists'
"State of the Climate Report"
Together with colleagues David Markowitz (Michigan State University) and Paul Slovic (Oregon Research Institute), I have been working on an empirical ecocritical study of the motivational discourse in the 2024 World Scientists' "State of the Climate Report." Focusing particularly on the concluding page of the report, which seeks to summarize the key points of the report and encourage public participation in efforts to respond to the climate crisis, we have used artificial intelligence to craft an alternative version of the report that highlights the feasibility of climate solutions and seeks to motivate readers to take action by donating money to climate change mitigation efforts. We are currently in the process of conducting an empirical study that will compare readers' responses to the original conclusion of the 2024 report with responses to the Al-modified conclusion. Our hope is to develop helpful feedback for the authors of the 2024 report and other writers (including scientists) who seek to motivate audiences to respond to contemporary environmental crises. This project will contribute to the emerging discipline featured in the 2023 book Empirical …

I will argue that world interest should not lead to world production, whether it is found in a productive act by the Earth or by humanity, as world production is accompanied by Earth alienation. A gestalt-based understanding of the givenness of Earth as noncausal ontic-ontological ground of the givenness of World is developed. The conceptualization of World and Earth helps to differentiate between the often-ambiguous uses of these concepts in environmental philosophy and contributes to contemporary debates in philosophy of climate change.

Indigenous Speculative Fiction and Homo Ecopoliticus:
Narratives for Ecological Justice in the Anthropocene
The concept of Homo Ecopoliticus embodies a human identity rooted in ecological awareness, political engagement, and ethical responsibility. Indigenous speculative fiction, as a genre that merges traditional ecological knowledge with futurist narratives, provides a powerful lens for enacting this identity. This announcement examines the works of Indigenous authors such as Rebecca Roanhorse's Trail of Lightning and Louise Erdrich's Future Home of the Living God, focusing on exploring ecological justice, non-human agency, and sustainable coexistence. These narratives critique anthropocentric paradigms and offer transformative visions of humanity's relationship with the natural world
Using an interdisciplinary methodology, the study integrates ecocriticism, Indigenous critical theory, and speculative fiction studies to analyse how these texts construct alternative ecological imaginaries. The analysis draws on key themes such as kinship with the land, the recognition of more-than-human agency, and the resistance to environmental and cultural exploitation. Tethering images that I collected over the course of a year with the artwork of different artists who work expressively with rusting) as a medium/method and cinematic moments in which rusting) produces bodies otherwise, I will share the results of my becoming-with rusting. The unsystematic production and disposal of garbage in public places is not always a casual and ignorant act and is often motivated by conscious political factors like power politics and vote banks. To elaborate further, in the context of India, it is observed that factors like the political affiliations of the municipality corporations and the political preferences of the residents underpin the waste disposal and hygiene policies in different localities. If the corporation's affiliation and the residents' preferences match, the residents may expect a well-outlined and systemic waste management system. Otherwise, the residents are forced to embrace unhygienic living conditions through untimely clearance of public wastes, flushing and accumulating wastes from adjacent residential areas, and many other ways.

Manifesto For a New Humanism

“For the past three centuries, the West has been driven by a doctrine of progress, first articulated by philosophers of the European Enlightenment, according to which the destiny of humanity is to exercise dominion over the rest of creation. This doctrine has underwritten developments in science and technology which have improved the lives of millions. They have nevertheless come at the cost of mounting social injustice and environmental degradation. Today, these costs are no longer sustainable. Contemporary critics call for an alternative, post-humanist settlement that would topple humanity from its pedestal at the peak of creation and re-embed human being in a world of more than humans, thus collapsing the distinctions between human and nonhuman, and between society and nature. However, this move, in absolving humans of responsibility for the life around them, would leave coming generations with no role to play in future planetary flourishing. I argue instead that humans are indeed exceptional among living beings, thanks to a way of listening that, by giving voice to the beings around them, weaves them into a chorus they alone can hear.
This is language, and it confers on humans a responsibility towards others that is truly exceptional. But it is a responsibility they can only exercise from a position at the heart of the lifeworld itself. This is anthropocentrism in the strict sense. Acknowledging the centrality of humans within a world of living beings, rather than their separation from it, is fundamental to a new humanism committed to coexistence rather than domination, and sustainability rather than progress. For the new humanist, humans are not beings but becomings, continually giving birth to themselves and one another within the crucible of a world that, as the word 'nature' suggests, is the mother of all things.
