I've been in the trenches researching/writing about eugenics in literature and culture for a Youtube series I'm putting together. This "women need to marry young" line of thinking is something that Francis Galton, the man who coined the term "eugenics," was complaining about way back in 1901.

Even Francis Galton addressed this very directly in a 1901 lecture, where he discusses the “effect of reducing the age at marriage,” bemoaning that “There is unquestionably a tendency among cultured women to delay or even to abstain from marriage; they dislike the sacrifice of freedom and leisure, of opportunities for study and of cultured companionship” (25-26). This is the fear expressed in so much eugenics and its literature, like in The Marching Morons where the intelligent elite don’t reproduce as much as their “moron class” counterparts. Galton goes on to share the anecdotal observation that “The large and thriving families that I have known were the offspring of mothers who married very young” (27).
