Wish this was an April Fools joke, but the Supreme Court heard arguments today to revoke birthright citizenship; an issue that most people decided was settled in 1898 with Wong Kim Ark. May I suggest that it might be worth looking at this book this week with your young readers?
I decided to change my word of the year to “Adventure” with the mindset to embrace uncomfortable things. So when , I was invited to participate in the “Dancing with the Local Stars” fundraising event for Cutchins, I agreed! 🙀😬🤣

The #veryasianbooktrip had a quick stop @possiblefuturesbooks before we ended. In honor of our AAV fundraiser for highlights (pls donate!) we asked (almost) every store to tell us about one of their favorite Asian American book. Lauren chose one of mine🥰. Such a sweet way to end the trip! 💜💜💜
So the last day of #veryasianbooktrip was a Very Asian Disaster! Sadly, this might mean the end of our future #veryasianbooktrip 😢. Cross your fingers we can find the courage to continue🚗! But it was great fun and thank you to all the bookstores who had us!

For me, many of the Chinese legends ended w/heartbreak—and I didn’t like it! Many of my books are about giving a new ending to these stories. For example, the legend of a Bell where a trapped spirit of a girl begs for her shoe. In my book, the spirit finally gets her shoe…and is freed.
Today is the Double Seventh Festival or what I was taught (in the 80’s) to call “Chinese Valentine’s Day”! When I made this video a couple years back, saying the proper festival name hadn’t occurred to me😬. But I still think this is worth sharing because I think we all need to celebrate love. 💜
When it was first published, it was thought putting an Asian face on the cover would turn off readers so I conceived of making it look like a Chinese red envelope with gold foil-was so happy about it! Over the years, the cover has lost its foil but gained an Asian face so I don’t feel any loss.
To my great surprise, “Year of the Dog” hit the USA Today’s bestseller list at 130 a couple weeks back. This was my very first novel, published back in 2006(?). While it did receive a starred review, it didn’t do much else. It has never made any bestseller list…until now, almost 20 years later.
for the fall, I’m collab w/my local indie to offer deluxe bk gift boxes! We’re planning the boxes to include an autographed book, enamel pin, sticker, a handmade candle & a print. But not sure which image to make a print of….The Old City Gate or The Dragon at the beach? Let me know what you think!
