“Why should my evening suffer for his poor judg-ment?”
Serivar frowned.
She matched his expression. “You should be happy to see my relationship failing. Imagine how much you could teach me without Jayce competing for my time?” She meant the comment to be sarcastic, but Serivar brightened. Before he could pursue whatever disturbing thoughts ripened be-hind that look, she said, “I have a question for you.”

Arhk’s frustratingly calm voice stopped him. “I sent that mission because I wanted my wife and son back. But I cannot have my wife back, and you are not my son. You are a young man someone else raised.”
“If you don’t see me as your son,” Kasiel snapped, “then I wouldn’t expect you to care if I choose not to use his name.” He reached for the door handle, the tears that stung his eyes fueling his anger. It wasn’t fair that a man who cared nothing for him had the power to make him feel so worthless.
“You would be wrong.” Warning added a sharp edge to Arhk’s tone.
Kasiel started opening the door, then hesitated again, a burst of longing making him linger in the bitter emptiness of the space between them. He stared at the lever as if it could somehow save him from the hollow growing inside. “What was her name?” he asked softly.
The stifling silence lingered. When Kasiel was about to give up and leave, Arhk answered him.
“Ellaris. Your mother’s name was Ellaris.”
The weight of her name landed heavily on his shoulders. A crushing sensation in his chest made each breath hurt. Why? He didn’t even remember her. Or maybe that was why. That his own mother’s name—a beautiful name—should sound like the name of a stranger to him.

Okay, now that the song is stuck in my head, I have to do today's #WIPSnip. Here's a cut from early in my epic fantasy, Child of Vanris, since I've been busy reviewing the audiobook version. #EpicFantasy #BookSky

$Excerpt from the book: “We didn’t mean to get your daughter involved in this. Our business is with the young man.” As she spoke, Barden came out through the door next to them. He moved around to stand beside Garrick, a short sword ready in one hand. Several other villagers were emerging from nearby buildings or stopping in the street, many armed with weapons or tools that would serve as such in a pinch. In a remote place like Fernwallow, the people had to stick together to survive, and they appeared ready to do so now. “Kas is a resident of Fernwallow.” Garrick’s deep voice rang out, loud and resolute, the conviction in it eliciting nods from several villagers. “If you have business with him, you have business with all of us.” Danica, looking calmer now and dangerously determined, drew a dagger from her belt. The woman raised her hands a fraction higher. “I can see we’ve got your hackles up. Let’s cool things down a bit. My companions and I have been on the road a long time.” She turned to Kasiel then. “Kas, is it? Why don’t you join us at the tavern? We can talk this out in a civilized fashion?” Kasiel raised his head and lifted his lip in a slight sneer, emboldened by the villagers gathering around them. No one needed to know that he was shaking apart on the inside. “You attacked me. I think we’re past the point where I might have been willing to speak with you.”$

“Or perhaps they didn’t have sufficient numbers in that first group to do more. Could they have been a scouting party?”
“A scouting party large enough to drive the army out?” He frowned at her back. “But if they were just a forward scouting group, why attack the city before the rest of the army arrived?”
She blew out a breath. “And why would they let the military escape? They must realize you could rally your forces and come back at them.”
“Perhaps, though the numbers we saw in that valley it would make it costly, even with our full army committed to the effort.” He dipped the fabric again and placed it against her back, trying not to put too much pressure on the bruises.
She stood abruptly, as if desperate to be away from him, a grunt of pain escaping her with the sudden movement. Without looking at him, she pulled the shirt down and walked over to where the fish was cooking. “Maybe that’s what they want. Your army isn’t likely to be aware of the force we saw out there. Another nightmare sent us from your homeland. It seems the land you came from produces nothing good.”
He stood and walked past her, trying to avoid reacting to her stubborn hatred with anger. “I suppose I’ll take that as the insult you intended.”
“Please do.”

$Extract from book that reads: “I see.” Kyril glanced between the two, his brows rising a fraction. “Retrieve those arrows. I want you all to take turns firing each of the different bows while the rest of us analyze your technique and offer feedback. Let’s see what we can learn from each other.” That was how they spent the next few hours. Veyl leveraged her status to have food and drinks brought out from the palace kitchens, so she might prolong what eventually transformed back into a friendly competition. Gannon finished a round, smirking at the well-placed grouping of arrows. On the ground, he was a little more consistent than his brother. He just didn’t have the knack Ahrin did for firing from the back of a fast-moving mount. “Well done, but your grip is too tight,” Kyril commented. “Ease up and relax into it a little. You’re trying to kill the target, not the bow.” “That was the best shot any of us made that round.” Gannon thrust the shortbow at him. “How about you, Ahninveth? I’d like to see how you do against us.” Kitria sighed. Ahrin leaned close to her as Gannon stepped back on the other side to watch. “My brother will never stop challenging him,” he said in a low voice, and Iyvalin nod-ded to support the assertion. “Because of what happened in Deepwater and to his tehnaak?” Kitria asked. Veyl took a few steps closer to listen and instantly regretted it. “Mostly, but also because of who he did in Thaelis.”$

“You don’t have to. Ahrin and Iyvalin talked sense into me, like they usually do. I know you didn’t do this on purpose…” He trailed off, giving her a shrewd look. “You didn’t, did you?”
“No. I would never do that to you, even if I knew how to. I don’t understand any of this any better than you do.”
He nodded as if he had expected as much and put an arm around her shoul-ders. “We’ll figure it out. I suppose I should consider it a compliment that you chose me, even if it wasn’t on purpose.”

#WIPSnips "bear" A little cut from the 3rd book in my Daughter of Vanris series.

A familiar voice spoke in the darkness. “Take what is yours, Seh’hali.”
Nagi?
Veyl turned, searching for the Qwilki woman and finding nothing but the whales.
“Do not fear the boundless might bearing in on you. Embrace the gift the wave dancer has awoken in you and open yourself to all that you must be.”
The Qwilki woman was still nowhere to be seen, but her voice came from all directions now. Veyl focused on the whales again, watching the group part to pass around her, reaching out to touch them. Another creature emerged from the darkness, approaching swiftly, its long body undulating through the water as it wove between the larger beasts. When it drew closer, she recognized the shimmering scales of a ji’ikyan, one of the serpents that had nearly ended her life with its sting.
