That’s part of what was so cathartic for me about this movie: I don’t feel like it’s socially acceptable to feel bad about myself. It is very cathartic for me to tap into these older, more archaic modes of expressiveness — to go, “Mother, I’m hideous!”

The crowd was packed and varied, the best kind of daytime show: Two-steppers thrashed in the mosh pit while families stood a safe distance away, their kids wearing ear-protecting headphones and tiny Xs on the backs of their palms.

here’s the weirdest lede I’ve written in a while

Something bizarre happened at The Basement Monday night. As I walked up to the doors, I watched a man pull a giant dog puppet out of the back of his car. I chalked it up to load-in for some quirky set dressing: I’d never seen The Angels of Death, Jason Shapiro or Impediment, and thought maybe one of the acts would be going for an off-kilter kind of Meels thing. Instead, to my surprise, the guy took control of the puppet and took a full lap through the crowd as the show began. The dog nodded along to the music and waved at people. Another guy followed behind, filming the whole thing on his phone. Were we all unwitting participants in someone’s TikTok? Did they pay for tickets for the show for this?

Foundation to Abolish Abortion's Pierce twice pointed out a Planned Parenthood shirt some of the women in attendance wore. It read, “We Decide.”

“That shirt says, 'We decide whether children live or die,'” Pierce says. “Our message is the opposite.
