I am a biologist who teaches cell biology at a medical school. The term "peptide" just means a short chain of amino acids connected to each other with peptide bonds.
Some peptides are antimicrobial (kill bacteria).
Some peptides are structural building blocks.
Some peptides break down clots. Some enhance pain sensation. Many peptides are signaling molecules; meaning, cells use them to communicate with each other and to initiate chemical reactions and physiological changes.
The peptides these people want to sell and inject are hormones (signaling molecules that affect cells far away in the body). Most peptide hormones have more than one function and affect more than one type of cell. Some peptide hormones can stimulate normal cells and cancer cells in the same way, and some have different effects on healthy cells and pathological cells.”

“We do not know all the cells and tissues that are affected by these 7 peptides, or all of their functions (what reactions or chain reactions they trigger). As the article notes, the data are muddled by a lack of consistency in
formulations. Meaning, vendors use the same name for different chemical variations, doses, and delivery methods.
Perhaps if we called these peptides
"experimental hormones", or better yet,

NYT comment: “That guy’s not safe”. I remember it so clearly because it was a weird way of putting it. I asked for clarification and he said that Platner is a guy that wants to burn things down, maybe his reasons are yours but he isn’t doing it for you. He is doing it because he likes how it feels”

My spouse and I went together to see Platner in Belfast this winter. I was mad, and Platner reflected that anger back at me. Only more focused, not polished but cogent. He wasn’t mincing words but he wasn’t spitting them either. We left feeling energized, hopeful.

A few weeks later I was at a friend’s house with the kids and my spouse went to see Platner speak again. This time at a smaller venue, right after the murder of Alex Pretti. When I asked him how it went he said “that guy’s not safe”. I remember it so clearly because it was a weird way of putting it. I asked for clarification and he said that Platner is a guy that wants to burn things down, maybe his reasons are yours but he isn’t doing it for you. He is doing it because he likes how it feels. My spouse said that is not the kind of guy you give power to.

We argued. Back and forth for months. I defended Platner with each new report. The court! Healthcare! But yeah it turns out my spouse was right. He’s not a safe guy.

I don’t exactly have the power of an AOC endorsement, but I’ve known Abdul for quite some time and I would be thrilled to see him represent public health in the Senate. He was our class speaker when I graduated from undergrad (Go Blue!) and then I got to know him better when were both at Columbia.
