Trying not to make this movie my entire personality after only watching it for the first time a week ago, but fuck me - this during a sunset walk in the city hits like crack
Started Red Dead 2 at long last over the weekend. How long until I get to shoot this whiny racist prick?
I’ve been trying to workshop a joke about a drunk ghost with his junk out but honestly it’s too hot, just have the stupid picture I took earlier.
My most Brexit-coded opinion is that Ham Egg n Chips is an absolutely god-tier meal.
ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN This is basically ASMR for me: lots of soft-spoken American accents, lo-fideilty microphones, the wee crackles and pops you get on older film audio. Don't let the fact it's an important political moment distract you from how Robert Redford is with his sleeves rolled-up!
CHAPPiE A tonally-uneven blend of Pinocchio and ROBOCOP that I seem largely alone in enjoying! Hugh Jackman plays a Christian fundamentalist in the worst shorts you've ever seen, and someone tries to upload their brain into a PS4. Complete nonsense but exactly my speed.
BRICK Another A-level film studies discovery. Had to watch it about three times while taking notes to get my head around it as a teen, nowadays I just sit back and let the weird Chandler-goes-to-high-school vibes wash over. Don't think Joseph Gordon-Levitt has ever been better.
KEVIN AND PERRY GO LARGE I know, absolutely terrible by all reasonable metrics but besides TOY STORY it's the most-quoted film between me and my immediate family. Also, despite being born in '95, I know my true destiny was to be a teenager getting blitzed to Signum in Amnesia in 1999.
SHATTERED GLASS Hayden Christensen is so good in this, guys. One of those true stories that walks a brilliant line to not overblow a story *about* someone overegging everything he wrote. Weaponises to great effect Peter Sarsgaard and that thing he does with his face that says 'You are SO fucked'.
AMORES PERROS The first film I saw that wasn't in English (big thanks to my A-level film studies teacher!), completely knocked me sideways. Shame that Iñárritu's gone off-the-boil since then, but the energy and texture in his debut feature(!!) is immense. Gael García Bernal, please call me.
TRANCE Danny Boyle follows up the 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony with what's basically a 90s erotic thriller. James McAvoy is bent art dealer who needs a hypnotherapist to remind him where he left a stolen Goya. A key plot point involves Rosario Dawson shaving her pubes. Certified classic.
20TH CENTURY WOMEN Lovely, lovely *lovely* film. Absolutely baked in nostalgia but less for a period and it's trappings, and more how that period and it's very specific politics, products and attitudes shaped the people in it. "They don't know this is the end of punk."
WE ARE YOUR FRIENDS I jokingly talked about this in my Very Serious Criterion Video™️, but I do genuinely think the 'Zac Efron is a struggling DJ' movie is pretty good. Scared shitless about the future while falling in love to an EDM soundtrack in the mid-2010s? Couldn't be me!!
EVIL DEAD (2013) When you're a kid and your parents don't let you watch horror films, your brain conjures up all these nightmarishly extreme ideas about just how gruesome and terrifying they could be. I saw this when I was two months shy of the 18 certificate, and it damn near made my head explode!
TITANE This was the first film I saw at the London Film Festival in 2021, after months of lockdown and making do with whatever fare the studios felt safe enough to put into cinemas. Felt like getting a blast of cold water to the face. Still waiting for that UK blu-ray, guys!!
THE TERMINATOR I know it's the received wisdom these days that JUDGEMENT DAY is the superior film for many valid reasons, but sorry: the grimy, near-slasher vibes of the original will always win out for me.
Bookmarked this post last week thinking "Haha, that would be a funny thing to do sometime." A stroke of inspiration (and two ciders) later...
Right, it’s my birthday and therefore I am owed attention and excuses to spew inelegantly about movies I like when I get some time later 🙂↕️
