Possessions per game have steadily declined since 2015 Points per game reached a 15-year low Plays per game have held steady in the last three seasons Points per possession are maybe leveling off? Plays per possession jumped to a 19-year (all-time?) high

Here's a quick chart that compares team's average total possessions per game since 2007 on the x-axis, and average total possessions per game in 2025 on the y-axis. Ohio State is highlighted.
College football possessions per game totals have been shrinking over the last decade due tempo preferences downshifting, plays per drive increasing with improved offensive efficiency, and game/play clock rule changes. FBS games averaged 23.9 possessions per game in 2025. bcftoys.com/possessions

Wild that the "losingest team in college football history" is now on the doorstep of winning a national championship. Wilder still to realize that they are also on the doorstep to possibly finish as the *best and most accomplished national champion ever* (per FEI ratings since 2007, that is).

One of the biggest problems with playoff discourse is data presentation, choices about what is and isn’t included in graphics like this and the depth (or lack thereof) of explaining what the underlying data means. (And I know, this bit is mostly a “TV show/content” problem).
