IrishBeerHistory
@beerfoodtravel
Despite the handle, I research and write about Ireland's brewing history and recreate Irish historical(ish) beers. Also posting food, and nonsense. Seemingly, I'm a 'gloomy beer drinker' who's 'lost in the froth on his pint.' beerfoodtravel.blogspot.com
This? Rocs ... (Yes, the glass has bubbles on it, and—yet again—no, it doesn't affect the taste.)
Last client seen today before shutting down for a well-earned break. I'm currently tempering my travel anxiety with a Rabbit Poo Negroni™ ...
A proper Irish half and half folks. (Mixed, not in layers as that's just 2 separate drinks in one glass!) This has turned out to be an extremely pleasant afternoon ...
Ritual and aesthetics. No weddings or funerals today so got into one of my 'dive' bars for a large bottle. I'm being a bit unfair with my terminology, being based on some of the clientele more so than the pub itself. The service and music is good—it's quite traditional and tourists would love it ...
This? Why this is one of the finest debut albums of the eighties ...
Those who have never worked alongside 'successful' business people and don't know they are (mostly) sociopaths vs those of us who have, via Joey ...
Here's a similar one from Ronald Gabriel's excellent book on old drinking glasses. Mine are superior(!) but this shows how far back moulded glasses go back. I have a fair few nice examples of Victorian moulded glassware. Jesus, I've just heard myself say all of that! All I'm missing is a wink ...
What else would you be drinking tonight? Served in a fantastic facet-cut rummer from around 1800(?)—although glass can be tricky to date. This is a solid lump of glass, a beer drinkers glass imo, and I'd love to know its history and the characters who used it back in the day. I have a pair btw! ...
FYI, from The Cries of Dublin by Hugh Douglas Hamilton from 1760 and edited by William Laffan ...
I'm not normally a fan of these sours but they are pleasant in this weather, plus I've a soft-spot for the brewery, even if their glassware is shockingly poorly printed and most likely to lose its logo and lettering! Interesting that it doesn't mention pineapple even though it's the main fruit? ...
Nice to give some old German(?) glassware a spin with a more-than-decent beer, especially given its bbf date. Ungainly to drink from and missing a thumb catch (daumendrücker?) but cut crystal and probably late 19th century. It's monogrammed 'ES' (maybe). It's like I'm restarting #BeerGlassology ...
While searching for that beer mat I came across these ones. I've had for a few years and they date from 1961/62 going by the tagline. One of my favourite series in my collection ...
Making the most of a couple of days down time. It's certainly the weather for this ...
Okay, so you can probably read a smidgen more into my beer choice now ...
Starting to do something I've been meaning to do for a while—pulling all my myth busting writings into one post with just the gist of my findings on each topic, and links back to the longer pieces, for the TL;DR brigade. The topics read like the chapters of a book that no one would dare publish ...
You needn't read too much in to my beer choice, but you can certainly read a little bit in to it ...
Notwithstanding my general dislike for most hazy beers this is shockingly poor. Meant to be bursting with fruit, it's more like fizzy water with a bare dash of MiWadi. I've had it twice now, on draught not knowing what it was, and now as my better half bought it for me not knowing either, ... [1/2]
You reminded me of this illustration of a Victorian bar from Loftus's Almanack in 1869 I put up 'over beyont' ages ago. Now there's a bar you could waltz along, let alone pass a pint along ...
I was hoping to head home via one of my slightly dodgy front (dive) bars for a pint bottle to reboot my unfinished article on the same. Sadly, one stinks of pee, smoke and sickly vapes, and the other was full of unmentionable and unbearable people. So having one at home, with incorrect glassware ...
Reading Beckett in the pub, because yes, I'm one of those unbearable people ...
I'm fairly sure the rules dictate that if you see Scraggy you drink Scraggy? No excuses ...
So, with blessings tallied and system demoaned here I am with one from DOT's Spin Off Series. I'm not a fan of their Aldi range, as any I've tried seemed a lacking, but I'm a huge fan of DOT in general. This is very nice mind, a big, pleasant bang of sulphur and then a clean light lager. Lovely ...
Oh! Seemingly I quite like hazy Dutch rye black IPAs. Who knew, huh? ...
Another nice find, sitting on a table in a charity shop today being ignored by all. A small wine glass ingraved with grapes, leaves, and tendrils. It has a cut stem and bowl, and a ground pontil mark on the base. If I were to hazard a guess at the age I'd say 200 years old, maybe? 1820-1840s? ...
Oh I'm not so sure about this one. It's like kvass mixed with rum, appealing to some but a bit sweet with too much of an overdose if molasses with bovril quality for me. I'll still drink it, obviously ...
I was left a half of case of Guinness Extra by a house visitor over the weekend so it would be a shame to waste them. And there's lads would tell you that it's too warm for Guinness off the shelf? Ridiculous ...
If certain Guinness drinkers' social media posts have thought us nothing it's that serving this beer in a branded glass on a requisite doily means it will taste 90% nicer than otherwise. #Sh!tIrishDeGarreTripel ...
