Review text reads:

“The term ‘atomic coffin’ was once used to describe Soviet-era nuclear submarines. But in this dour, ’80s-era sci-fi thriller set on a top-secret USSR sub, it’s not radiation exposure or dodgy build quality that’s going to kill you.

When MI6 agent Heidi Sperling, undercover in East Berlin, discovers a naval log revealing a Soviet submarine, TK-15, that has been motionless in the North Atlantic for three years, she’s reluctantly recruited by the Royal Navy to search for the mysterious craft. Finding it deserted, they decide to board. They soon wish they hadn’t.

Boasting some claustrophobia-inducing detail about serving aboard military subs (have you ever wondered about the smell when watching Das Boot, for example?) and a believable, quirky, multi-layered central character (whose head you spend a lot of time inside), Atomic Coffin feels like an underwater version of Event Horizon, with a little bit of Solaris mixed in. It’s basically a ghost story with just enough science-y rationale to make it sci-fi. But while it’s a perfectly effective, often tense page-turner, it feels a little over-familiar and never delivers the contemporary narrative twist it needs to move it up a level.

Still, if you love novels where characters keep telling themselves ‘It isn’t real!’ this is a sunken treasure chest of delights.”
