my dudes, I have the luxury of being retired (one of the upsides of being 'nearly 70') so I took myself on a 10+mile hike and cleared my head of whatever was ailing me (+1900' elevation gain will do that to ya!)

the road goes ever on and on, in this instance the dirt road cuts thru green and gold grass and heads up into some far off hills under a California Blue sky

this road of brown dirt and golden grass descends toward a glade of trees which seem to flirt with the hills behind them. Same deep blue California sky overhead.

my backyard milkweed, in its 2nd year (from seed), did host a couple of very healthy monarch #butterfly #caterpillars this month, too -- they've since moved on to the chrysalis stage somewhere in the vicinity & the milkweed plants, stripped bare, have immediately put out fresh new green leaves! 🌱

in spite of Deer Fest '26, when my entire backyard #garden was destroyed over 3 nites when Bambi's mom hid in the way back, & gave birth to twins (eating EVERYTHING but the zucchini), here's a small miracle! (this is the 1st year these milkweed, from seed, have bloomed) 🌱 monarch caterpillar #4!

22.3 mile urban #hike today in the East Bay. Walk started off in the Richmond Marina, and then a the 4-mile trek across the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge -- a lovely day for it! Then on to Larkspur & Tiburon but we had to go WAY out of our way to get to Larkspur b/c infrastructure was only for cars.

after a long climb up and over a considerable hill, one is greeted with a stunning view of the Bay and the City of San Francisco (in this case, the city is almost completely obscured by "Karl," the city's faithful fog companion.

a coyote comes up from a hill onto a lovely section of tall golden grass. Behind him, framed by lush dark green trees, is a bit of a greenish meadow.

our path leads us along a blessed reprieve on a relatively flat passage, but as we have a long way to go at this point you can see the hills in front of us that we will be traversing. We are under a California Blue sky with a few wisps of thin clouds; the rolling hills are mostly brown with some spots of dark green trees in the low bends where a creek flows.

yesterday's #hike was ... something the steep downhills are just as tough, in their own way, as the uphills - and since this was an out-and-back, you can see the mirror image perfectly reflected. Some of the hills were on a 30%-plus grade!

I did not turn back. 10.30-mile #hike with 1900' elevation gain. Kept up a 20-min mile average pace, which is pretty wild considering some of the hills. At least, *I'm* impressed! 😁
