Better Beckenham

Transport, planning and climate change in Beckenham, South East London.
Another day, another close pass... This is why #Beckenham needs protected cycling infrastructure cc @londoncycling.bsky.social @liamconlon.bsky.social @bromleygreens.bsky.social @bromleylibdems.bsky.social @bromleylabour.bsky.social
PSA: the middle of the lane is *exactly* where someone on a bicycle should be in this situation. Next time you come up behind a cyclist in this position, they're not 'hogging the lane', they're just cycling safely and will move to the left once there is space for you to pass safely #Beckenham
The 7.30am rush hour on one of Bromley's worst rat runs. Residents have raised concerns about traffic volumes, speeding & reckless driving. Yet, Conservative-controlled #Bromley Council won't put sensible measures in place: filters, traffic calming & protection for those walking, cycling or wheeling
Lovely day for a ride - shame about this close pass on Westgate Road, #Beckenham. We need proper cycling infrastructure. Cc @londoncycling.bsky.social @liamconlon.bsky.social @bromleygreens.bsky.social @bromleylibdems.bsky.social @bromleylabour.bsky.social
8.30am on Beckenham High Street during Easter Break. You'd hardly know it's the morning rush hour! This shows how much car traffic comes from school travel. If our streets were genuinely safe for parents & children to walk & cycle, we could permanently reduce traffic for safer streets & cleaner air
Drainage upgrades on Westgate Road near #Beckenham Place Park, were completed this week by Lewisham Council. Parking spaces by the park entrance have been removed, vehicles should be park on Foxgrove Road. 🤞 less traffic, better drainage will prevent the road becoming a boggy mess when it rains
While other London boroughs have been getting on with investing in traffic filters, school streets & cycle lanes, which are *proven* to make streets safer... Bromley Council resolutely ignores residents' demands to tackle speeding & high traffic volumes www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
Bromley Council has started procurement for a £900k public realm overhaul of Elmfield Road, immediately north of Bromley South station. The current state of the road is pictured below. Interested to see what improvements are introduced here www.architectsjournal.co.uk/competitions...
Over 2.5 years ago we posted about the poor management of Westgate Road, Beckenham (thread below). Glad to see Bromley Council officers out this week, enforcing a new permit parking zone that should make the school gate safer & healthier for St Mary's Primary students @chloe-janelibdem.bsky.social
Heritage buses will run on the 54 bus route, Blackheath -> Elmers End, on Saturday 13 September
Making space for people using bicycles, wheelchairs and mobility aids is important but frequently overlooked or resisted by residents and local authorities alike. No wonder it's so hard to get around using these modes in Bromley! Image credit: Wheels for Wellbeing
Art exhibition presenting work by students of local artist Lucia Boaghe, organised by the Beckenham St Vincent de Paul conference. Free entry, 3pm Saturday July 5th at St Edmund's Hall, 9 Village Way BR3 3NA 👇 #Beckenham
Tragic news 💔 A teenage boy has died after getting into difficulty while swimming in the lake at Beckenham Place Park on Friday www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
Another polluted & congested Saturday on #Beckenham High Street. Limits on through traffic, separated cycle lanes, and making the parking spaces loading zones & blue badge only, would transform the high street at minimal cost. Boroughs across London are doing this - why not here?
Bato Coffee opening soon on #Beckenham High Street, in what used to be the Sinclair Hammelton office
More recent signage improvements in #Beckenham - this is at the bottom of Foxgrove Road, indicating that cyclists can use the toucan crossing on Southend Road @londoncycling.bsky.social
UPDATE: as of this morning there is a painted cycle lane too
Cycling infrastructure in Bromley is woeful. Yet, in the spirit of recognising even small improvements, new signage around the Westgate Road bridge in Beckenham makes it clearer and easier for cyclists to safely travel northbound against one-way vehicle traffic @londoncycling.bsky.social
Such a shame that #Beckenham High Street so often resembles a large carpark, with on-street parking and gridlocked, polluting traffic slowing down buses (much of it not even visiting the high street stores). It doesn't have to be this way! #streetsareforpeople
Including a helpful diagram showing the actual stops - full map can be downloaded here: geofftech.co.uk/downloads/Su...
Candidates are now confirmed for the new Beckenham and Penge constituency (in no particular order): Conservatives - Hannah Gray, ward councillor for West Wickham Labour - Liam Conlon Liberal Democrats - Chloe-Jane Ross, ward councillor for Beckenham Town & Copers Cope
Wondering what is happening above Erin's pub at 150-156 #Beckenham High Street? The works will convert the existing flats and office space on the first and second floor into nine studio flats, including a loft extension. Full details: searchapplications.bromley.gov.uk/online-appli...
