Tonight’s the night!!! My Night-blooming cereus is in bloom! It blooms once a year, only at night. By morning the flower will be withered. The scent is AMAZING. I had forgotten that it was going to bloom tonight, then walked into the kitchen and the scent reminded me that it was in bloom.

Night blooming cereus (Cactaceae). Member of the cactus family, it blooms once year, at night, and the flower is withered by morning. Large flower, mine is 10” diameter (!), with a gorgeous scent. So many petals ! Petals are white on the inside of the flower and a salmon/dusky pink towards the outside of the flower. The pinkish ones are probably sepals. I haven’t studied cactus flower anatomy in a while, so can’t say for certain.

This is a blossom from last year. The one on the left is on a different leaf and withered, it bloomed the night before.

Photo of a night blooming cereus, and a withered bloom on the left. As the name describes, this plants’s flowers blooms at night, and for only one night. In Asian cultures a huge celebration centers around the bloom, and one such celebration was
depicted in Crazy Rich Asians movie. The flowers are extremely large (the size of a human palm), white in the center with white stamens and pistil, and pinkish/salmon on the backside of outermost petals/sepals and flower stem. It’s also quite pleasingly fragrant. It’s a member of the cactus family. It’s easy to propagate…get a cutting and put part of it in water until roots grow. Then plant in soil. It likes being root bound, so you will have to wait a while (year or more) before it blooms, and blooms midsummer.

Pink honeysuckle, Lonicera hispidula.

Lonicera hispidula, pink honeysuckle or hairy honeysuckle (hispid part of hispidula means hairy). Petals roll back to expose exerted (long, beyond the petals) stamens and pistil. The flowers are attached at the approximate same point, the unopened flowers grown up and curve to look like (to me) a palm-up 6-fingered hand. The hairy leaves are not in the photo; the flowers develop at the tips of the vine and this inflorescence was sticking out and above some bleeding heart plants, which makes the (blurry) green background.

Pacific star flower, Lysimachia latifolia (=Trientalis latifolia). Single stemmed ground cover that ends in a whirl of leaves and flower extends from there. Flowers on an extremely fine pedicel. Super at asexual reproduction and I am here for it! Free plants! #FlowerReport

Pacific starfower, formerly Trientalis latifolia, which I’ve come to learn has been changed to Lysimachia latifolia.

Pink 6-petal flower with white in the center of each petal down to the center of the flower, making the flower look like a star. Stamens long with bright yellow anthers. The flower is on a long, very fine pedicel, that you can hardly see, kind of makes it look like the flower is floating. Each plant is a single stem with leaves in a whorl at the end of the stem, and then the pedicel is attached.

Plants spread via underground rhizomes. The rhizome is round, like a pebble, and attached to it is a long white filament…I’ve never seen anything underground that is so white. I don’t have a photo of them atm, maybe I’ll take one and post it as a quote post of this post.

Western Azalea, Rhododendron occidentale. Sources do not agree on the distribution, the plant was sold to me as native to WA, so that’s what I go with. #FlowerReport Here’s one source (there are others, but not listing them) nativeplantspnw.com/western-azal... It also has a lovely scent.

Western azalea, Rhodendron occidentale, has relatively (for a native plant) large, showy flowers with 5 petals. The petals are not radially symmetric. Rather, there are two upper and three lower petals. The upper 2 petals have solid yellow coloring starting at the center that becomes spotted farther away/towards the petal edge. The bottom three petals have pink coloring, with the center of the three being mostly pink, and the two on either side of the center petal are pink longitudinally on approximately half of the petal and closest to the center pink petal. Stamens and stigma are long and showy. Flowers are part of an inflorescence (many flowers close together) rather than single flowers scattered on the bush.

He now has to pay 1.4 billion to these parents for defamation, and as a result (simplified) pays by losing InfoWars. Fuck Alex Jones and anyone associated with him or who enjoys his blather. The other side of the tote features the same InfoWars graphic as described above but in camouflage greens.

Beautiful! I bought a pattern for mittens and a hat in this pattern. I haven’t made it yet because I’m looking for the perfect yarn colors. I want to use Pacific Octopus colors for the octopus.

Mittens, hand knitted, featuring an octopus pattern. The octopus is in green (which matches the coat that the model is wearing) on a black background. The head/body and a couple tentacles are on the back (not palm) of one mitten, the other tentacles are on the back of the other mitten.

A red flowering currant (Ribes sanguineum) raceme with lots of dark pink and white petaled flowers and dark green leaves. Hummingbirds love these flowers, although I don’t see any hummingbirds today.

Nice article. When reading this, keep in mind that $1M in the late 70s/mid 80s had different buying power than $1M today has. So women aren’t able to capture earnings like men could/can. I found an online calculator which estimates that $1M in 1984 had the buying power that $3.2M has today:

We are experiencing an atmospheric river atm so dug into my archives and decided on this Mariposa Lily, RMNP. Might have already posted it but it’s too lovely to care. #FlowerReport

Mariposa Lily, Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado. White flower with green sepals. Petals have a purple ring and greenish-yellow hairs under the ring to the center, six “millennial pink” (pale pink with a tinge of gray) stamens, and a 3-prong whitish stigma. Background is out of focus rocks and greenery.

Happening now: night blooming cereus! I missed the blossom last night, but there is a second that is blooming now. This blossom is bigger than my hand (palm+fingers) and has a scent similar to jasmine but sweeter and less intense. Really wish I had a better camera! #FlowerReport

Night blooming cereus blossom, white with pink/blush in the petals underneath. These flowers bloom once and only at night, and are withered by daylight. But plants can produce multiple flowers that will bloom different nights. I usually get one blossom but this year two developed! The pink-striped “bud” to the upper right is the blossom from last night. The blossom in this picture is bigger than a hand (palm+fingets) and the scent reminds me of jasmine, but sweeter and less intense.

Purple penstamon (Penstamon whippleanus). A red-purple tubular flower with 3 lower lobes and two upper lobes. Often called beardstongue because of hairs on the lower lobes.

Jacob’s ladder, maybe Polemonium pulcherrimum (?). Light blue-purple 5-petal flowers with exerted stigma with pjnnately compound leaves. The best match in “Wildflowers of the Rocky Mountains” is Polemonium foliosissimum. Either way, it’s definitely Jacob’s ladder. I have a Jacob’s ladder in my yard, absolutely love it.

I haven’t had time this year until vacation for flower photos. But I made up for it! Look at these beauts! Identified these plants as best I could, using “Wildflowers of the Rocky Mountain Region” by the Denver Botanic Gardens. All plants were in Rocky Mountain National Park. #FlowerReport

Gunnison’s Mariposa Lily (Calochorrus gunnisonii). White petals with purple inner line about 2/3 towards the center that makes a circle in the calyx, followed by green-yellow hairs below the purple line, then purple in the very center, with pink anthers. Gorgeous!

Colorado blue columbine, Aquilegia coerulea. White petals with looong spurs and this one has pale blue/purple sepals (the blue ranges from pale to dark in this species).

This one was hard to photograph with a phone. You’re looking for the red/brown spike in the center of the photo … but look closely and you’ll be rewarded with tiny flowers! This is an orchid, likely Wister’s coralroot /spring coralroot, Corallorhiza wisteriana. Originally we pulled over so I could get a close up of rough paintbrush, which previously had been along switchbacks and no shoulder to safely pull over. We finally came to a pull-out with paintbrush growing along side it, and the orchid was there along with the paintbrush. Per Wikipedia this orchid is mycotrophic (gets food from fungi … the lack of chlorophyll gives away that it’s parasitic on something) and paintbrush is semi-parasitic (has chlorophyll so technically can photosynthesize but needs help), so maybe not surprising that they were grown growing together…even though it was just a generic pullout with lack of a ‘view’.

Three scientists are recording communications by dolphins in a pool in the lab; two scientists are listening and one is keeping track.
