Unfortunately, the Affordable Groceries Act will stall in committee this week. But we will carry on the fight to address food access in the months ahead.

Last year we created the first Entertainment Zone in District 5 and placed it in Hayes Valley. This allows local businesses to sell drinks during neighborhood activations, ensuring that street fairs benefit the local economy.

Today's Hayes Valley Carnival was a special one: it was the first time the Entertainment Zone we authored was used in the neighborhood!

Did you know the city used to have a program to convert corner stores into affordable grocery stores?

Today we passed Supervisor Danny Sauter's Paid Family Leave Ordinance at the GAO Committee I serve on. This is a big deal - it will allow families to take paid leave after 90 days of employment - halving the time and aligning with other comparable benefit requirements.

The Tenderloin is getting a suite of new small businesses. $6.99 noodle shop. A thrift store. New neighborhood bar. And more! All possible because of the city's Storefront Opportunity Grant. which gave $50K to reactivate empty storefronts.

Hear it from the Mayor of the Tenderloin himself, Del Seymour, we need the Affordable Groceries Act to hold large chains accountable when they create food deserts in our city.

Food deserts destroy communities. When the Safeway shut down in the Fillmore, with no plans for a replacement grocery store, they didn't just take away a community benefit. They broke community trust. The Affordable Groceries Act offers a new path forward.

It's a myth that grocery stores don't want to open in San Francisco. Last year, 3 grocers made a bid to take over an empty Safeway. Safeway refused every single one. Large chains would rather their property remain vacant, than allow competition. Because zombie stores are a feature, not a bug.

This is one metric SF should not be proud of. SF has the lowest rental home vacancy in multifamily homes of any major city. Our housing stock is in such short supply, renters are forced to compete, and as a result rents are up 15% y/y. We need bolder housing reforms, now.

Happy One City Day! From the Western Addition to Japantown to Tenderloin, Cynthia and I joined hundreds of District 5 residents to plant trees, pick trash, and serve food. Thank you First Lady Becca Prowda and all the city departments for organizing this city-wide event.

Retail theft is a known problem in San Francisco we must acknowledge. But over the last year, it finally dropped over 20%. This is thanks to undercover operations by SFPD.

Did you know SF's conflicting housing laws can make us choose between a bathroom and housing? Our Building code requires a restroom on a rooftop common space. But our Planning code inadvertently requires that restroom count against the building's height limit. Make it make sense!

Today I announced a hearing into the mass evictions and malpractice allegations in Western Addition apartments.

In light of the events of the 4th of July Weekend in San Francisco, I will be submitting a letter of inquiry to city departments to better understand what went wrong, particularly as it relates to Waymos contributing to gridlock and insufficient transit options available.

This weekend's Fillmore Jazz Fest was a special one, as it used the Entertainment Zone that my office authored.

To tackle our open air drug market, we have to take multiple approaches to cut off the supply. Drug dealers in San Francisco continue to adapt - from selling different drugs to operating out of different storefronts. We are now taking measures to address that.

A year ago, you told us where D5 needs safer streets. Now we’re making sure those improvements move forward. Today we are deploying $500,000 in traffic safety investments across the district. Speed humps, raised crosswalks, and painted safety zones.

The Board of Supervisors today unanimously passed our expansion of the Fair Chance Ordinance! Across the country, reproductive rights are under threat. LGBTQIA+ rights are increasingly being banned. Even abortion is now illegal in 13 states. The passage of this legislation will help fight back.

There's a new burger and dive bar coming from the creators of Outta Sight Pizza! Reggie & Maude's will be opening this fall in the TL, serving a "skinny-thick" burger of their own creation. To preview their food, they held a popup today at Jules Pizza before they open the dive bar this fall.

The event follows months of a community advocacy after the loss of Fennel Boyles decades of gardening on the corridor, but the community and city are coming together to bring back the memory of her work.

This morning I joined NOPA residents as we participated in the second Divis Median Beautification day. Thanks to the leadership of Ryan Booth and Sarah Bashford of NOPNA, this beautification day focused on the 900 and 1000 blocks of Divis with planting of new plants and succulents.
