People are beginning to gather for a protest at the corner of 500 South and Main.
Protest scheduled for tomorrow at 11:30 AM outside Grand America Hotel before speech by President Trump's homeless policy guru-- Robert Marbut. Marbut is part of a team at HUD that has proposed numerous massive cuts to housing programs that end homelessness.

Feeding a child should never be a crime. Everyone in Utah should call their legislators and ask them to oppose HB 88.
Today is my daughter Samantha's tenth birthday. Despite the fact that she died in a car accident when she was five years old she is still very present in my life.
HB 88 would make it a crime in Utah to give food to children who cannot prove they are authorized to be in the country. It is a bad bill. You should oppose it.

Every now and then it is important to stand up and say "The Emperor has no clothes". The proposed homeless campus is a grab bag of bad ideas that do not fit together. It will be a synonym for failure in Utah for decades if it is built.

Shumway has a couple ideas for funding all of these involuntary treatment and commitment beds-- using federal Medicaid funding, taking federal homeless services funding away from other counties and making cities and counties pay a share-- presumably through a tax increase.
The plan envisions having hundreds of beds at the new mega shelter dedicated to involuntary commitment for people with mental illness and involuntary substance use treatment for others.

State officials estimate 24,900 Utahns may be cut off Medicaid when new federal work requirements are imposed. That is why this meeting next week with Utah's Medicaid Director about how Utah can hopefully reduce that number is important.

The immediate impact to Utah's state budget under the Senate proposal is much smaller because the base line for state cost sharing is 0 percent instead of 5 percent in the House bill. Senators have heard some of the complaints raised by constituents about the House bill.
