Hong lost by 4,000 votes, and in fact did well in some rural counties. This comes down to campaign strategy, not a massive referendum on DSA politics.

The "It Could Happen Here" episode on CNL is pretty silly. At one point they get a random Socialist CUNY professor to explain how what the movement is missing is class struggle lmao. He repeats that one massively tortured statistic about wages not growing for 46 years at one point.There are some parts that are generally true, but it's probably nothing you're not aware of. We're out of touch, we're contrarian, we're overly online, like tell me something I don't know. Then they go on to say that CNL's positions come as a reaction to the DSA. That's just annoying lol. It echoes a common inability among leftists to conceive of people who simply have different beliefs and policy preferences to their own.

CNL's Bay Area chapter was involved in that "Pro Billionaire" march in San Francisco earlier this year, in protest of California proposed wealth tax. Stunts like this “March for Billionaires” is a perfect example of CNL’s overly online, irony poisoned politics that displays a deeper sincerity.

Some stuff on Zohran's constraints of power and what it means to govern as a democratic socialist from my latest epsiode of It Could Happen Here on the mayor's first 100 days - podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/z...

In the realm of discourse, some leftists, anarchists, or ultras have jumped on any fault or policy shift as a sign the Zohran has moved to the right or betrayed the movement. Such opinions are rewarded by the social media economy which tends to encourage whatever is seen as the most radical, extreme, or divisive opinion. This tendency has been present even among some of Zohran’s earliest supporters. Behind this tendency is a willingness, and frankly hunger, to turn on Zohran, not necessarily for anything he has or has not done, but because of the position he now occupies.

Zohran used to be an outsider, challenging the democratic establishment embodied by Andrew Cuomo. And now he’s one of the most popular democrats in the country. DNC social media accounts are posting Zohran memes and hype videos. This could be viewed as a massive accomplishment, evidence that the democratic party can be forced to bend toward leftwing populism because of working class voters and mass organizing that put Zohran in the position he's currently in.

But others view Zohran’s acceptance and select promotion within the party as a sign he’s been corrupted, co-opted, recuperated, or made palatable. Both of these things can be partially true. The democratic elite certainly have their own motives for dipping their toes into the Mamdani hot tub, just as Zohran and NYC-DSA have their own aspirations for influencing the direction of the party towards social democracy.

In general there is a lot of confusion or disagreement on what it means to be a democratic socialist in a position of power. As an executive, Zohran is in a unique position that not many other DSA members have ever had. Such a position of power informs and shapes the way someone interacts with the systems of party and state in a way that those outside of power cannot fully understand. It filters ideology into material actions. This idea frightens many, but importantly the differences of political horizons also affect the way people…
