If this is a prickly pear cactus, it is the most mature one I've ever seen. That tree trunk really transitions to the leaves. Outside my little vacation rental in Belize 😎
With the temp at 3°F, the marsh looks kind of like the surface of Enceladus.

Here is a full size charcoal drawing of elevator doors by Jeff Fichera, an artist in upstate NY. When it was exhibited at the Guggenheim in NYC, they had to put a plexiglass cover over it to protect it like the Mona Lisa because everyone wanted to touch it.
I think this is a Jerusalem artichoke; having bloomed, then gone through two frosts, it suddenly put out these little late-bloomers.
Haha, my amateur meal planning results in a very not-green meal of a stuffed chicken breast with a side of homemade Mac and cheese with carmelized onions and sauteed mushrooms. Also a blue cheese sauce😋
When I was trimming our beach roses, what I thought was a small twig fell onto the porch. On closer inspection, it seems to be some kind of mantis. When it was pretending to be a twig, it stretched its forelegs out straight in front of it, and it really worked for while! I wish I could show you that

Has anyone seen this happen? After a few days in my veg drawer, the carrots got damp and this black stuff - mold? - on them. This is the second 2lb bag in a row, after decades of buying these from the same store and nothing happening. If peeled they are okay underneath. For a few days...
The little beach down in front is called Red Beach, because its ochre sand looks red at sunset. Having hiked to the top of the headland, I was not about to lose the altitude just for an hour on a beach 😋
