Don’t know how FairVote’s sample paper ballot format would handle the 2013 Australian Senate election’s 57 parties above the line or minimum 15 candidates per state below the line. Oval markings are preferred in the US over numeric marks or check marks, so limiting the slots makes sense.
Looking at Muscogee, Miracle Rankin won Psalmond, Epworth UMC and Beallwood Baptist (formerly Columbus Tech) precincts, all light-pink.
Election Day thread: I'm assuming that Democrats are currently nearing/past 800k votes. We're heading to 1 million blue votes, I think.
Georgia Democrats last led the vote in a gubernatorial primary in 2006. However, 2006 ended up being the worst-ever performance for a Democratic nominee for Governor (Mark Taylor). He also underperformed Dems for SOS, AG, & Commissioners for Labor and Agriculture. Let’s uhhhh, not do that again.
Among counties, white Democrats constitute the highest percentage of early voters in Athens-Clarke. The next highest is in Taliaferro County, the least-populous county in Georgia and second-least east of the Mississippi River. South of the Fall Line, only Chatham and Glynn figure among the top 25.
I wonder what Colin Woodard thinks of this. He’s written about the long political marriage between Deep South and Greater Appalachia, so the Midlands joining in doesn’t seem far off.
#gapol, Remember when Newt Gingrich and the RNC in the 80s and 90s decided that the single-winner majority-minority districts under the VRA were good to use to flip districts away from white Democrats, and civil rights orgs agreed? Well, then.
But also, how are you running for top of the ticket and underperform in Muscogee County both "top" of the countywide primary ballot (the District Attorney) and another candidate for Court of Appeals who DIDN'T CAMPAIGN A LICK. This was completely avoidable on the part of Barrow. Never again.
In the 5/21/2024 primary, Georgia voters cast 526,974 ballots in the Democratic primary for Congress compared to 594,564 Republican ballots. On the same ballots, liberal Supreme Court candidate John Barrow received 526,640 votes compared to Republican appointee Andrew Pinson's 643,131 votes.
I mean, think about it: are we really going to use this ballot design for all legislative elections when we have elections for 10-20 statewide executive or judicial offices, as well as elections for dozens of highly-specialized local equivalent offices? End the ballot slopulism first.
Same for the 9 state legislatures which have (or will enact) their own state VRAs. They should probably start enacting multimember PR districts today actually, no need to wait for SCOTUS to kill them too.

As of 5pm 3/5: Democrats have filed for 155/180 HDs, 44/56 SDs, 10/10 state row offices, 14/14 CDs, 1/1 U.S. Senate seats and (I guess) 1/10 District Attorney circuits. Largest field of midterm candidates in three decades in both legislative chambers, with room to grow by noon tomorrow. #gapol
As of 5pm 3/3: Democrats have filed for 136/180 HDs, 32/56 SDs, 13/14 CDs, 9/10 state row offices and 1/1 U.S. Senate seat. Dem incumbents withdrew filings for two HDs (too early?). 16 Dem state rep incumbents have yet to file for re-election in open HDs. #gapol
