Dr Alan Stout, chair of BMA's Northern Ireland Council: "The Northern Ireland Audit Office report on the Health Estate in Northern Ireland makes for alarming reading and raises yet more questions about how efficiently the health budget is managed and spent.

"The money incurred on vacant properties alone could be better spent on paying staff properly and growing the workforce.

"Healthcare facilities in poor condition present greater risk to staff and patient safety and both create and exacerbate negative working conditions. Any strategy to transform health services must address both workforce and infrastructure deficits."
